I enjoyed how often Diggers mentions in the recording that him and Sasha will NOT be playing like this at the festival.

They certainly weren't averse to donning the trance trousers when the occasion demanded, but despite having accrued a number of their sets from the Year Of Our Lord 1997, I've never heard either of them set their phasers to gurn and proceed merrily up the BPM count quite like this before.

I actually have a set, somewhere on my HD (or one of my HDs), where Sasha is happily smashing it out at 140. The odd thing is that it wasn't in 96/97/98, I think it was 99 or 2000, and he's just pitched up what he was playing then. I wish I could remember which one it is, actually, as it's a very odd mix. I think I got it off MS years ago, and the commentators in the thread were trying to figure out just how fucked he had been.

That said, 'phasers to gurn' is a truly wonderful expression

This is pretty much what Nick Warren did for three hours in this set, and it's great:

He was playing at U60311 in Frankfurt later that day, which is where guys like DJ Rush and Chris Liebing would beat up crowds with schranz for about twelve hours on a regular basis. It sounds like the progressive house/trance guys adapted by putting the slider to around +4 in Germany during those years.

Trance Trousers.

this should be an official thing. make sure the first letters are capitalised.

reminds me of Trouser Enthusiast. fucking weirdest name for an act ever. can you imagine trying to be let in for a gig and telling them you are Trousers Enthusiast? That probably happened and he changed to a different moniker straight away

Much as I'd like to take credit, it was a running joke in the dance music mags back in the '90s. I'm pretty sure the Muzik review of Northern Exposure 2 refers to CD2 as being "full of trousered up tuneage."

Pitched-up prog can be a wonderful thing. The first hour of J00F's Essential Mix from 2000 is a classic example. It's great to get those energy levels out of music that isn't woefully predictable in structure.

nice... didn't know that. that's maybe where that 'Trouser Enthusiast' name came from then.

Ah, totally forgot about this set! I used to ski to this, years ago. Great reminder Yes, it's very well done here. And in those J00F EMs. In contrast, I actually don't quite like the Sasha set I was thinking of, as he simply bangs it out too hard. I need to figure out what it was and share it, hmm.

It's great to hear this and props to Jack for upping the DL link.

I think people forget that they could play banging when they needed to, and this set is a classic example of them going for it.

I think people think of the "2nd wave" of S&D and think that's their sound but you cna argue that they often went the way of the trouser. (and yes Rubez, that's why Trouser Enthusiast called themselves that. Still, I'm pretty amazed they played Blue Fear. You don't usually associate S&D with Ferry Corsten tracks.

I remember seeing Sasha at Alexandra Palace on NYE in 1998 - it was absolutely fucking pounding. Talk about pitched up Prog and Trance. Digweed was never quite as plur as Mr. Coe but they still went there..... (that's Libra/Albion/calling your name, pitched up to +6)

This is why I can never take anything you write seriously.
