in another building on geary close to the time we went to lobster showcase. a different building on the other side on the upstairs. way less crowded ! bigger space too. the dance floor was really crowded though but more side area. mcdonalds was right across the street too ! the line was on the inside on the staircase. it was easily missed if you're just driving by. curious if they get proper licensing for these jams

I feel surprisingly okay today, considering that I definitely blacked out at one stage last night, didn't get to sleep until 8am, and woke up at 12pm. I was expecting to feel completely destroyed! The older I get, the more these next days feel like complete hell.

Cattaneo and Warren at Ministry was fucking great, though more so Cattaneo than Warren. Warren played a few of the new Way out West tunes which are just a bit too treacly for my palate, but for the more part he was solid and Cattaneo was brilliant. Will definitely be wanting to see him again in the future!

I foolishly declined an invitation to talk about North Korea on national television.

I hesitated because I'm a linguist who likes philosophy, not an expert on foreign relations... And the only person I know who tries to cover all three fields is not exactly someone I look up to (in spite of all the hype). I sort of regret it now, because there aren't (m)any experts on NK here anyway, so I'm not sure it was the right time for intellectual humility.

I got to sleep in though, so I had it going for me, which is nice.

Surely, Lira, you could have just talked about language and foreign affairs, and kept philosophy out of it?

What did they want you to talk about? Would you do it if they ask a second time?

Always nice to sleep in

They wanted me to focus specifically on Trump's recent bellicose statements about North Korea and Kim Jong-Un's warmongering attitude. Sure, I could talk about it if it were a quick interview. The programme, however, would be one hour long and there'd be another guest there with me talking about how (un)likely a war in the Pacific would be. And, to be fair, I just told asked the reporter if she could call me later because I was off to a meeting (which was true, but I also wanted to have a think), but this is what made me so reluctant to say yes.

As a news junkie, sure, I can talk a little about Kim Jong-Un and Park Geun-Hye, and Trump, and Abe, and Xi, and Putin - but I'm not sure I could do it for 20 to 30 minutes... So, if I accepted, it would be pretty much an impulsive decision.

So, to be honest, I'd accept because my wife (and my secretary) were both egging me on, but I still think they'd eventually turn me down once they read my CV (which I assume the reporter hadn't up to that point as they were looking for the former head of the Centre for Asian Studies, not me)
