I'm partially joking that your attempts to explain things to your siblings could backfire. Basically no one likes to be pitied.

As a kid I wanted to be like my brothers but it never was a competition. That was a life time ago. All my siblings have gone through good times and bad. There's always an implicit bond I'm always there for them but I think it's a mistake to give advice or get involved unless asked. I'm also sensitive about talking about my accomplishments.

English is not my first language, so it's probably my fault. Yet, I don't see what it is that I said that can be interpreted me pitying my siblings.

If you read my post to Nick, I make it clear I say the few things I achieved were thanks to positive circumstances and grit, which are quite neutral, value wise. I also say my siblings have had great achievements of their own, so I don't see how it may have sounded like I pity them.

Also, I'm much more willing to talk about Nick's achievements, such as him working at a couple of kick-ass companies. It just so happened that my so-called accomplishments gave some background information about my family so I could relate to what he said

Sorry to change the subject I was recently watching some backpacking travel shows in Brazil.

One was taking cargo boat trip to Manaus. Pink dolphins and the history of the rise and fall of the rubber trade.

The other was a rail ride from the western edge of Brazil through Bolivia to the coast.

Both were fascinating but you can't help being struck by how poor people are and the conditions they live in.

Yeah, the Amazon is gorgeous... and dirty poor. My wife worked deep in the Amazon for a while, and it was an eye-opening experience for her.

She went to a city the size of the Netherlands, with a couple of thousand inhabitants, and the GDP of South Sudan or something. She says the coffee was delicious though, and probably had more sugar than actual coffee in it

i only have (younger) sisters, so there was no real competitiveness during adolescence. there was a bit in early adulthood, but i think that was more inferred from parental expectation than any inherent conflict between us kids. i was supposed to be the smart one, but it's the middle child that ended up with 4 (? i forget, honestly) science degrees and prestigious job description. i don't resent her academic or vocational success at all; she's worked so fucking hard it's ridiculous. i more feel sad for my parents coz i never really found a similar passion that made me care about anything like she did.
