I also have to temper my expectations and remind myself that I wasn't much better, even into my early 20s. My paternal grandfather was a strongly, healthy, hard working man all his life (and in all of my memories). My paternal grandparents kept us from birth till age 5, basically, when mom and dad were working during the day. He was diagnosed with Type II diabetes at age 70. Between that, and the hereditary coronary heart disease that runs so strongly in the males on that side, he went down hill for 8 years. I watched him go from a 6'1", 190ish lb. man who welded and worked on his farm every day to a shell of a man who was nearly blind, had no balance, was cold all the time, and whose clothes hung off him from weight loss that he couldn't seem to stop no matter what. He was in the hospital recovering from carotid artery surgery when he elected to also have a heart valve replaced. I was so hung up on my "social life" and hanging out with friends that I only wen to see him once in the hospital...and my dad had to practically beg/force/coerce me to go. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. He died a few days later. I have very few TRUE regrets in life...but that is one of them.
