But I have to disagree with you about that, my friend. With so much anxiety about the future, I find that many youths are extremely concerned about their studies in high school/etc, so that they can go to a good university. For her to care more about the environment than her schooling seems rather inspirational to me. It's not like she did not go to school for just a day, she's missed months. |
All I can say to that is that my own attitude towards my studies or school attendance at that age was not exactly diligent.

The most obvious psychological problem with climate change is that it's invisible, and people struggle to reconcile seemingly-harmless actions with their consequences in a somewhat abstract global system. If a condition of flying long haul was tipping gallons and gallons of oil into the sea in front of each passenger's eyes*, there would be a horrified reaction and much more self-analysis about how much they really needed that holiday to Thailand. But as it stands, you fly long-haul and nothing appears to change. You can't see the damage. And so the reality doesn't sink in.
Because the issue is so large, so incremental and so hard to intuitively grasp, a lot of people remain unconvinced by just how bad it really is. And I've noticed a lot of people basically think the environmental lobby is just alarmist - they're exaggerating, they're virtue signalling, they're hypocrites, and so on. There's so much bad news, pushed so relentlessly, that people become either desensitised or hopeless.
Obviously we need to keep the environment at the front of the agenda, I'm not denying that. And I've got no problem with what she's doing, or that we have this "face" of a movement. It's more the coverage around her that's annoying - how repetitive and ultimately banal most of it is. I think it's in danger of becoming just another example of the left being too histrionic and frankly too irritating to win over the unconverted. Don't keep telling us the same unconvincing shit over and over again. People will turn off.
*Just a visual example, not a direct comparison with what flying long haul does.
