As I remember it, it was Paul Van Dyk who came up with the tag "Electronic Dance Music" in an interview around that time when DJs wanted to portray themselves as more eclectic than just playing trance. So "EDM" may have cropped up on TA around that time before anywhere else on the Internet, but PVD would be the originator.

One reason I actually bother to log in here to read and post shit is because TA still looks the way it's supposed to look, and hasn't been given some sort of supposedly modern design of the kind that is invariably a pain to look at and use on an old-fashioned desktop screen.

It would, however, have been nice if it wasn't like I'm the only person left in the world who enjoys listening to old Remy and Lemon8 dj sets and trying to piece together tracklists which no-one apparently bothered to do for about twenty fucking years. That stuff ought not to be forgotten. Music history and all that. Perhaps most so-called progressive house and techno afficionados/trainspotters on here spent most of TA's past smashing the refresh button to follow all the live updates of Schulzy's GDJB tracklists.

Nice find, PL. Matt seems to have become a sweet boy over the years.

Lews and System J spring to mind from quite a few years back.
They seemed quick to judge and lambast others. I remember myself and a few others on the Anjuna or Matt Hardwick forums had a discussion about it. Think there was a bit of a boycott going on for that reason.
I remember it being briefly mentioned of Lews to be like Mr Moss's yes man who would jump in and agree with everything he said and if you weren't in 'their gang' then you weren't welcome on here because god forbid, you should actually declare a liking for trance on a 'trance' forum.

Didn't take long to stumble across.

The Anjuna & Matt Hardwick forums were for the most part positive and constructive.
Yeah, a few debates were always to be had but character assassination like below is not justifiable.
I would hazard a guess and say in conjunction in the rise of social media, people don't really care for coming onto an online forum to get slated by someone who acts like an elitist.

Ah, the Anjuna forums. Would lurk there on occasion. Was quite entertaining watching the fall-out from A&B's transition to 'Trance 2.0' and all that.

Also, the fact that Matt Hardwick had his own forums truly is a testament to the era when forums were so popular and widespread that nearly every DJ had their own vBoard.

We've all pretty much mellowed out by now.

If social media encourages self-validation, then forums were all about self-indulgence. Take a bright early twenty-something and give them an unlimited character count through which to prove it in conversation and, yeah, things get pretty pretentious, pretty fast. I'm sure there's a ton of cringe in our post histories that we can barely bring ourselves to read now.

Most of us still active around here are well into our thirties, and have neither the time nor interest for all the empty posturing of yesteryear.

One thing we unfortunately can't run away from are our usernames.

Oh, I'm definitely still a bastard. I can only be said to have ascended to the position of Bastard In Chief in the 2010s though. Before me there was the whole era of RJT, Clovis, Bas, Az and co who were aggressively policing tastes on here during the "minimal era" of 2006-2010.

To be honest, TA's activity levels have been steadily on the slide since around that time, which is basically when trance firmly exited stage left as being any kind of vaguely cool or relevant genre. Deprived of new recruits, the entire trance scene consists of the same generation of clubbers from the early '00s who've steadily got older and have either retired or whose tastes have predictably matured.

There was a very brief revival around here from 2010-2013 when J00F's Essential Mix got people excited that good trance might still be out there, but despite some concerted effort all-round the "trance revival" never took off for the same reasons: no new recruits, no wider interest.

The irony now is that thanks to techno DJs playing old '90s tunes, 18 year olds are actually interested in unabashed trance again. However, that demographic has nothing to do with the moribund trance scene. It's a techno crowd.

As a now mid 30's guy that was active here in the noughts, I do think we're seeing a re-emergence of the trance scene now with the sounds being pushed by Giuseppe Ottaviani and the the old guard that was actively producing back in the early 2000 or thereabouts. However, GO is pushing the quasi psy-prog-trance sound that J00F also is famous for, so maybe it's just right place, right state of mind, right crowd now.

Granted, I haven't paid that much attention since 2005 or thereabouts if trance changed or just went back underground or stayed the same for the duration up until now. I'm just seeing a lot of youngins gravitating to that sound more now.

But when this Pandemic is sorted, I'll take my ass down to Luminosity Beach Festival and dance with all the old heads as well as new.
