I see a listing on Juno that claims to be an unmixed version with 28 tracks on the first disc and 27 on second |
That is probably the mixed version that is just mislabeled by juno as the track count is identical to the chapters that this mix is divided into according to the .GU043 landing page
I've now almost finished listening to it. Initial reactions are twofold. On one hand I absolutely love it. The allaround quality is untouchable. Musical content is enjoyable, mixing is top notch. Ebb and flow of the mix is solid. The mix does not feel rushed in any way. The obscene amount of tunes sit in the mix comfortably without anything standing out too much.
And this is my main gripe. I feel that there are too few (almost no) real peaks in this mix. Sure it flows perfectly, has its ups and down, troughs and valleys, but the intensity never rises above a certain treshold. There is plenty of tension-release type moments happening, but whenever the atmosphere starts to thicken, air is let out of the balloon. So many opportunities for true peak time crazyness feel missed by the restraint. The above feels a bit redeemed by the final 20 minutes of CD2, but still - the energy could have gone so much higher. I know that it could most likely be mitigated by cranking the speakers to 11. Will try it sometime.
All in all its a very strong mix. Joris Voorn has taken his characteristic sound and perfected the balance014 formula. I will definitely keep this in my playlist for a long time. The replay factor is strong. I recommend!
