Here's a couple of tunes that I'd say had a pretty big impact on the era we are talking about.

Kompakt also had some nice releases during that time from the likes of Robag Wrumhe/Wighnomy Brothers, The Field, SCSI-9, John Tejada and others. Cocoon obviously had huge impact as well but I personally never liked the stuff that was released there.

Edit: I wasn't aware that the I:Cube track was released in -97. My bad.

I think most of the jokes came at Dubfire's expense. I do recall some quarters calling it (along with Heater) a 'shark-jumping' moment for the mnml scene at large, where any pretense of making Serious Music was lost in making obvious club anthems, even if in a very minimalist way. Such folks took it all a bit too seriously though.

Seriously.

I think Minilogue was what got me into "mnml" the most back in the day:

mnml has a melody, but what was after mnml is the worst era in edm, best example of this is burridge howells set in vancouver olympics closing party in 2012.

I had a listen to that set out of curiosity. It's actually from 2010, and while there are a few funky moments early on it's undeniably at the apex of that ultra-dry tech house sound that "mnml" evolved into.

I missed a lot of cool parties when the Olympics were in town. That was not one of them.
