Its okay to drop in old tracks if you do it skillfully and make it calculated. C'mon, we're talking about Oakie here, He's one of the biggest DJs on the planet and its not as if he can't get new stuff.

For instance, PVD will still drop tracks that he was spininng in 98 on bbc1. Tiesto will still drop tracks he spun at the first innercity. Its all good. Its all about good programming and getting a crowd reaction.

Im not a big Oakie fan myself but I give respect where its due. The man's been around longer than most and his promotion of the music and his remixes helped to allow trance and other forms of dance music to flourish into what it is today. Its because of his of stature and his standing that everyone nitpicks every little detail. The man is good but he's not perfect. The point is, playing old stuff isnt necessarily a bad thing as log as you know how and when to drop it.

I cant believe that you are complaining about how Oakey drops old tunes.. twilogoddess, maybe you should ACTUALLY go and hear him before you start bashing oakey about being "stuck in a time warp". So what if he dropped solar stones... lotta Djs drop old tunes..

how many times has PVD dropped for an angel or we are alive.. and how old is for an angel???
I remember when PVD use to play out binary finary like crazy last year and year before that.. and im pretty sure he'll drop the same tune in another set this year

and its ridiculous that you are saying that he drops the same tunes from 3 years ago.. why dont you try hearing his new set and comparing it with a old one.. It may be the same style of music, but its not the same stuff... I guareentee u that..

I admit that oakey hasnt changed his style of music (like PVD wha has gotten harder and more tech) but then again he hasnt had to..

and for the wind thing, cany blame oakey... not his fault =)

oh also.. saying Oakey is predictable is a bit of an overstament dont u think?

i heard him in DC last month, and he spun the new madonna song, PPK- resurruction (Mp3.com song. who knew he would spin that? =), the new Jan johnston song, (still dont know the name, MINIMALISTIX - Twin Peaks Theme ( still cant find this new record... ), and alot of kickass breakbeat tunes..

entirely new and fresh set.. I mean he threw in Ascention just to hype the crowd up... but then, dats okies signiture song.. kinda like PVD has for an angel..

Twilogoddess, I agree with you 100% ... I had the same experience with Oakenfold about a year ago when he played in Edmonton. His set was totally uninspired, bland, and poorly mixed (trainwrecks included). And there was no wind here ... hahaha ... although he did look coked out so that might have contributed to his bad performance ...

well, long story short - oakenfold doesn't live up to his reputation

Personally, I think it's just as bad when a DJ plays COMPLETELY new and unknown tracks in his entire set (unless they're all top notch quality) and IS NOT even willing to play classics, anthems and popular tracks every so often in FEAR of being looked down upon by fellow DJs and music critics. I mean, most people (myself included) love hearing and dancing to tracks that they know and love. Altho, I agree that DJs shouldn't be predictable and shouldn't rely fully on classics and anthems either. It's a fine line between the two extremes. I wasn't particularly impressed with Oakenfold when I saw him at a club night in Vancouver last summer.

I'm just getting fed up with local DJs who play mostly boring low-energy unknown (or at least not well known) tracks for most of their set. I guess it's their style (mostly Progressive House) that I'm mostly sick of rather than their track selection (which sucks cuz of their style). But, I'm just sick of RARELY, if ever, hearing any of my favourite tracks. Personally, I have a lot more respect for DJs that just have fun with it every once in awhile instead of taking it so damn seriously. Actually, it's the low-energy trance/house I'm hearing too much of that irritates me. A DJ can play a great high-energy set and still be very professional and serious, even playing lots of unknown or lesser-known tracks. Sorry... just venting a little about the local scene here and the current prevading style of trance/house ("Progressive") more than anything else.

I don't wanna be able to predict what's he gonna play. I don't wanna hear a set of old tunes whether they're anthems or classics. Oakie does recycle the same songs, 50% produced by Perfecto. He's not the only one..PVD & Tiesto are guilty as well. But PVD & Tiesto produce tracks they are allowed to beat them to death.
I have Oakie sets...I've seen him live. I paid $40 for a stale 2 hour set. I was disappointed. As a Top DJ he gets sent promos/new records 6 months before they are released. I go out to hear primarily new music. The fact that he relies on classics & anthems means he's lazy. It's easy to play 7 cities or Ubik...he knows the crowd will go wild. He should experiment w/some new upfront tunes...see how the crowd reacts.
