Oh my gosh I placed the exact question on another forum. I am going to buy one this thursday for recording when I play out and also recording at home. Net MD isn't really usefull don't bother. It's good to put mp3's onto the minidisk but you can't take a minidisk recording and upload it to your computer. So for me it isn't useful.

Also I heard rumours that if you record in long play you loose quality. Can anyone confirm this??

Yes, recording and 2xLP and 4xLP loses quality. 2xLP isn't too bad and gives you exactly 2 1/2 hours of music on a 74 minute disc. The 4xLP is pretty poor quality though - it will give you 5 hours, but personally I'd only use it for recording lectures and stuff, you can't really listen to music at such low quality for long :/

hey so wait a minute once you have the data on the minidisc is that easily tranferable back onto the computer cause thats what i would need it for!? (like in soundfoge or something?)

AFAIK, that is not possible with MD's of any type (could be wrong though).. For something like that, e-wear, memory stick, or IPOD...

Unless you could be bothered getting a line-out cable, plugging it into the minidisc and into the line-in on your computer, then recording it using TotalRecorder or something similar..

Which seems to make the MD a redundant step....

Well that depends on your definition of easily... You can't do it through USB, via the NetMD protocol. You can hook up the line out on your MD unit to the line in port on your soundcard, and do it that way, but:
a) You'll have to do it in realtime (ie. 2 hours of audio will take you 2 hours to transfer); and
b) It will be an analog recording.

Yes there is a difference in quality between analogue and digital. Think of it like a video tape, if you make a copy of a videotape, the copy is a bit blurry and has crappy sound. If you make a copy of the copy, the picture and sound get worse. It's the same thing with that - the more you move it, the worse it gets.

But with digital, you will get exactly the same thing every time - it's an exact replica.

Also line-out cables will give you line noise and stuff like that - I don't know what your ears are like but you may not notice it....

I have a sony MZR700PC, I record mp3s straight onto minidiscs and its great. One thing I really like about it is the fact that you can record over the discs, unlike CD's and they can also fit a hell of a lot more than CD's

if you want decent quality get one with an optical line not analogue

We're talking about MD to PC transfer. as far as I know no-one produces MD units with digital/optical line out.

yea thats only for recording onto MD not other way around was just giving my opinion that MD's rock and thats a good one to go for
