I only use the cross fader to cut my mixes short if they're coming apart near then end ;-)

I guess it all depends on your style of mixing and what you're attempting to do.

well, yeah, it's gotta be at the right spot. usually, the 32nd or 64th beat, or the 256th (4 * 4 * 4 * 4). it all depends where you start counting though

I usually drop the second song at the last major crescendo (break down) of the first. lets call that number 1. then from beats 1 to 64, i get it lined up perfectly, and at 64 i fade it in, EQs still low, but the song is playing and audible in the speakers.

from 64 to 128 i fade it, making the incoming song louder, and the outgoing quieter, using the EQs to keep it constant volume. then at 128 beats, there is usually another substantial change in the song at this point, this is where i usually swap the basses, which makes the incoming louder than the outgoing, since the bass is mostly what you are hearing.

then i start fading out the ougoing song.

you can do the fading with the crossfader or line faders or even the gains if you want, it's all just volume.

that's in a typical two tracks, not all of them work like this though, like T said, just experiment, and also watch other DJs.
