I defenatly prefer mp3 players. One of the biggest reasons is that I dont like having to carry around a bunch of small little cd type things. Which are almost worse than regular cds because there easier to lose, and cant be put into cd wallet things. Additionally a lot of mp3 players have the distinction of doubling as a portable hard drive.

c) MD's dont require a stinkin computer!!! <~ main reason
d) MP3's are lower quality than MiniDisc, unless sampled at a very high bitrate.
e) MD Media is less prone to damage than CD media
The investment to add Minidisc recording to a DJ booth is minimal. MP3 technology requires: A computer and assocated junk (keyboard/mouse/monitor), recording software, and a quality soundcard if you want good recording quality. And after all that investment, you still have a clunky computer to deal with. Plus, a mindisc deck fits much nicer in a ATA case and requires less setup time at a show
One thing I really like about my MD deck, is as I record a set, I can touch one button on the deck as i bring in the next track and set the track markers as I go.
MP3's are not ruled out - but I consider MP3 to be a distribution format, and nothing more.
MP3s are great in some environments - but not pro audio. |
also wanted to ask you which MD player do you have that has that function if setting "cue" points, that's so sweet
and could you let me know what is it called so i can look for other players with that function ?

this thread was recently discussed in the DJ booth:

i'll post what i said in there.

I have owned both, so i feel i should weigh in with my opinion. First i bought this:

I LOVED IT. it was great for recording music, it had an analog line in, so i could record right out of my mixer. It also had digital transfer, so i could put my music library on it. It had a huge screen for picking your music, that showed you the title, album, allowed playlists, etc. I got the smallest one, 6Gb, but still, that's tons of space. it was very flexible, lots of good options, even pitch control ffs! (albeit really shitty pitch control)
However, the software sucked, it was slow and clunky, and tried to take over my computer. The recording was good, but only recorded in .wav format, so you had to record to wav, download to computer, convert to mp3, and upload back to the player to get the full advertised 100 hours of advretised recording capability.
There were "updates" that needed to be done, which didn't always make it any better. For instance, one update took the recording, and split them into new files every 10 minutes. so then you download to computer, and it's a bunch of 10 minute mp3s! not cool for recording mixes.
I think that some of the newer "updates" may allow recording directly into mp3, but i am not sure.
the headphones of course, sucked ass, but they were able to drive my DJ cans quite well.
But, the ultimate reason i took it back, was size, and fragility. It would die if you shook it too much, just turn off, at which point you have to wait through a long bootup process. it was also too huge and clunky to carry around while dancing, snowboarding etc.
so, i took it back and bought this:

it doesn't have quite as many features, but i like it more. I CAN record directly from an analog source, the jack autodetects and will take optical or analog. pretty neat eh? i think all the sony MDs are like this, mine is bottom of the line and it does it.
the batteries last FOREVER, like weeks on a single AA.
the recording quality is good, not AS good as the mp3, but still good enough.
it's great having MDs, i have tons recorded with all my favorite sets, and it's so easy to just pop one in.
but the best part, it's SO portable, smaller than a pack of cigs!
my verdict? both are good, MD is better, unless you want to just sit around in one spot listening to mp3s

oh and BTW, my MD player allows track marks too.

I love my MD player... Basically I just record livesets onto it. It goes at 1x but who cares? I leave it on overnight and in the morning I have new music for a week.
MP3 cd players are too big imo, mp3 players that use ram don't hold enough, and mp3 hd players are still in their infancy. Not to mention you can't record live on most (if not all?) mp3 players...
Of course mp3 hd players have their advantages... for example the creative muvo looks really cool because you can use it as a usb hd and also play music from it, whereas somthing like an ipod is also really cool because it holds sooo much.
Just look at the alternatives and make up your mind... either way you'll be fine though.

I've been an advocate of MD for quite long. I've owned the MZ-R90, MZ-R900 and currently own the best of the bunch the sony MZ-N1.
The good thing about this is the fact it can transfer converted MP3's onto the player at up to 32x recording. That may sound great but MP3 players do it like that all the time! The N1 is also extremely light and never skips, so its fantastic for use during exercise. And of course all of the Sony functionability and practicality make it a really good package. I particularly love the stick remote. Since u can connect this MD to a computer u can name tracks using a keyboard! It might not seem like much, but previous generation MD players, u had to tediously name them via the remote or player.
The only disadvantages are u cant upload music at a fast speed via the USB link, u have to do via an analog cable. They are not expensive, but of course the sound quality will decrease. The only reason that this MD cant do this is due to SOny's Copyright protection scheme, which is also in place on its MagicGate MEmory Stick Players as well. it is due to this that i cant transfer AvB's ASOR Eppisode 76 on to my MD, as the Jukebox cant find the copyright information!
As for reliability, my other MD players suffered no problems at all, but this one has gone a bit funny right now, I think the disc cradle inside the player has come loose so that the spinning machinery cant make contat with the disc and whirr up, and the only way i can remedy this, is by pressing down on the player REALLY hard to make it work! I'm sure thats not the best way to deal with it
