hey i just wanted some info hope you can help me out,
have you used the technics 1210's? if so how did you find these compared to them (these are my two options) also the design of these ones look very cool, like to sony's but im curious do they have the durability issues of the sony's (flimsy) or is that all sorted in the pioneers? also could you describe the sound compared to other phones you may have tried?
thanks!

If you can find a dj shop around your area, then I'm sure they will have all three of those phones for you to test. Bring a cd that you know how it should sound and then listen to it with the different headphones.

If you don't want to go with the Sonys because too many people have broken theirs, or the Pioneers because they are too flashy, then I've also heard that Sennheiser HD25s are better than the HD280-pros. I've never listened to them though, so you may want to read up on them and listen to them also.

It basically comes down to what YOU want in a headphone. The sonys and pioneers do have exagerated bass, but I perfer that when I am mixing. I could care less if the sound is "perfect" if I can't distinguish between the two bass beats enough to mix well. Everyone has different ears, and everyone listens to slightly different things when they mix. Again, it's up to you to listen to these phones yourself--then make a discission.

Well done - 'nuff said!!

I think that beautifully sums up quite everything. JohnSmith, the best thing for you to do is to try the phones you're considering. I live in Toronto, and the HD-280's were unavailable for the longest time, but recently I have seen them at a major audio shop downtown, so they might be available in Vancouver (not sure). I hope all of the phones you're considering are available to try.

Your ears are the best judges.

Alright, I have a question:

How do the Pioneer HDJ-1000, Sennheiser HD25, IXOS DJ1001, and Technics RP-DJ1200A compare?

Those are the "Kickass club-phones to beat".

John

I have a pair of HD280s and i also wear glasses. As far as comfort goes i have no issues with them. They are very comfortable because the complete encircle your ears and don't pinch them anywhere. Some people complain about pressure from the headband but i have not found that to be an issue even after a couple hours of wearing them.

As far as plugging them into a MD player i would take your MD and test it with them first because i tried plugging mine into my discman and they don't work at all. I guess the discman doesn't have enough grunt to power them.

I would still be using the HD280's if they had a little bit more bass response...when using them for one eared monitoring the bass/beat is little more then a faint tap and the treble can tend to be a little shrill when you turn up the volume.

I still have them in my rig but i prefer to use a pair of Technic RPDJ1210's for DJing.

hmm.. decisions decisions.

I don't think i want the sonys, i've heard to many bad things about them breaking, and the bass being washed out.

as for looks, i really don't care at all, i'm a very utilitarian person, i need headphones to mix with, not to look cool. in fact, i'd almost NOT want the pioneer just cuz they are so flashy.

i think i've decided on the senns, because i would be using them for bedroom DJing, but also hooking them up to my computer speakers at work, and maybe my MD player, never going to levels very loud, and i want the best sound i can get. i think that the senns are easier to drive, where as the massive pioneer or sonys would probably not sound good at all with my puny little MD player.

but, if they distort that easily, then i might not want them. i suppose it all depends at what volume they distort, if that's quieter than i mix, then they'd be ok.

I wish i could try some out, but i have to order any of this stuff over the net, all my local stores cary are sony.
