My favorite movie of all time would be a little known movie called "A Better Tomorrow" ... its a chinese HK movie made in 1986, it was the movie that re-vitalised the Hong Kong movie industry. It was also the highest grossing box-office movie in most of Asia until Titanic came along.
The movie starred Chow Yun-Fat of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fame. And it was directed by John Woo.
Hmmm, there are other movies which i absolutely love, but can't seem to get them out of my head at the moment.

funky. a movie thread!
thought provoking movies are the ones i adore the most.
they have some sort of influence in your life by allowing you glimpses of diff perspectives, tho half the time, interpretations are always somewhat subjective.
anyway.
1] American Beauty
2] Requim for a Dream
3] Fight Club
4] Vanilla Sky
5] The whole Kevin Smith series, Chasing Amy being my fav.
cheerio!

I prefer to see more 'uplifting' films only because sometimes i need to be reminded how good the human spirit can be. I'm such a downer!
I also like how you guys have exploited the 'max of five films' by including 'honourable mentions' but thats understandable, this is known to be one of the hardest questions in life.

Grrrrr, "bestest" is a double superlative. Don't you remember your grade 5 English teacher ranting on about that?
Anyway off the top of my head,
1. The Matrix
2. Lock, Stock & Two smoking barrels.the matrix
3. South Park - Bigger, longer, and uncut
4. American Pie
5. The Usual Suspects
Can I put in Ferry Corsten World Tour Tokyo 2002 DVD as number 6?

One of the things I hate most in life is putting things into categories or rating them...arghhh
I can't choose 5 but I have to it's so evil I feel like I'm being forced to do something heheh even though it's my choice to post....oh well, 'nuff ranting..
hrmmmm
Vanilla Sky, was tops
Memento, was great
Natural Born Killers, just for ingenuity/creativeness/uniqueness
Cube, for the character exploration
Dark City, awesome whackiness
Honourable Mention goes to : Pool Hall Junkies.
Christopher Walken is the coolest man on the planet, and if you like billiards/pool, this movie rocks

oh yeah! Requiem For A Dream had a profound effect on me as well. It's such an involving movie...I became really attached to the characters, so it was so depressing to watch them be destroyed. oh man, I was shaking in some parts of that movie, and by the end of it I was in tears!
I really liked the film techniques..the stylish split screens etc were very impressive!
Anyway, I think it's an absolutely fuckin brilliant movie! Darren Aronofsky is a great director. That's why it's one of my faves
