Marijuana puffing mexican soldiers were blamed for violent crime rise by the local government (even though there was more than enough proof it wasn't them), and the illegalisation caused a tidal wave across the US. There was also a huge push by a pulp and paper baron to ban hemp (pot's close cousin) at that same time to promote paper products. Just about everything was hemp at the time; a much superior product.
