if it's for a demo you need to try to make it sound as smooth as possible but at the same time you need to maintain the energy like you said so get to know your records well and your all set. also have fun

I like start with some progressive stuff (also with vocals), followed by some melodic - upifting tunes that build up in some hard-trance, tech-trance. As lasts tracks of my set i like some hard-deep stuff and to finish something very uplifting and euphoric to leave listeners happy. I usually like to do so but there are infinite possiblilities, creativity is an important quality of a good dj. Try to listen live-sets of famous dj and try first to emulate them and then to realize your personal style.

for me i just play a normal set and see what comes out of it from there.since i write every set down i play in a playbook(a must for beginning dj's in my opinion,as it is easy to review what you played that night and how it sounded.dont forget to include the pitch ranges, makes it easier to do a cd comp later))then if i really felt in the zone that night and every mix was comin off smooth i'll re- record a section of that playlist that i think has the right energy.i find this easier then going over track after track to see what goes well and what doesent.plus it keeps it from sounding to robotic in my opinion.

GIVE TRANCE A CHANCE....
