I heard that trance evolved from German 'industrial' techno when some innovative artists from the genre started adding melody to their techno tunes.
So essentially you've got the repetative bass pattern with flowing melodies.

But I agree you cannot determine the exact 'point' when trance became. But if you could I would worship that point in time!!

Generation Ecstasy. I forgot the author, anyways it is an incredible book, very well written and it describes the progression of all these genres and how they started and changed over time...

Im surprised.. you guys have been talking about german techno but neglected to mention RMB

these two guys have evolved their style from german techno into trance over the past 12 years.. you can actually see the progression hehe

I'm not sure that RMB was techno or is now trance. They have their own distinct sound which I find very hard to classify. But I'd say it's closest to non-childish hhc.

Although I haven't heard any of their new stuff, only remixes from trance producers. Do they have some new material? I'd like to hear it very much.

HAHAHA. Well, the relationship between gay club culture (especially black gay club culture) and electronic dance music since its origins is pretty undeniable. But the gayest genre was Chicago house, because it was a straightforward evolution of disco. The Detroit techno fathers tended to reject the ghetto and gay aspects of the scene by not using as much diva vocals and being less "funky", but still, the club scene in the US was pretty gay in the eighties, which included gay clubs in NYC.

Moroder, a German dude, is the father of disco. But yes, it is obvious that the diva vocals of trance come from that legacy.

Not really, there was a lot of German trance before Children. Jam & Spoon- Stella, Jam & Spoon-Follow me, Humate-Love Stimulation--- Are all from 1993 and clearly trance in every element.

But don't underestimate the evolution of music history and the influences of the pioneers of electronic dance music such a Moroder and Kraftwerk and then into Chicago/Detroit. Trance owes it all to them.
