I couldn't find any decent pics from the crowd from Ajax Amsterdam, I could only find these 2 pics, both from away-games.

and this last pic, which says: Greetings from the Champions League (just to annoy the other dutch clubs)

you guys should also know that it is forbidden to light flares, when you do that you will be banned from the stadion for a year, that's why there aren't many flares...

See how the Kop used to be, when it was not all seated. The Kop in full swing during a match back in the sixties. The Kop are singing the Beatles' hit "She Loves You" and Dusty Springfield's (or Dionne Warwick's?) - "Anyone who had a heart"

The birth place of singing at matches The Spion kop.

You can't really capture that in a photo, flares and so on are banned in British stadiums, yet the British clubs have very loud and organised fans, some clubs have hundreds of well known chants as well as many made up on the spot, something you just rarely see elsewhere unless they have copied British chants. You can't go and buy that in the club shop, it's the spirit of the fans.

Flares are great but just impractical. If you gave Newcastle fans flares on derby day there would be a massacre! It's sadly the same without seating, it descends into mayhem and people get killed, crushed to death, you name it. What I don't like about some European clubs is they think it's enough to just light flares and dementedly wave a flag, as far as I'm concerned that's secondary, those are novelties, the primary concern is making noise. Don't get me wrong, I would like British stadiums to be more liberal, but you know it just doesn't work with our fans, the passion quickly spills over into trouble. Next year I plan to go to as many away Champions League games as I can afford (probably only a couple), although I think it's quite pathetic when we can outchant an entire European stadium despite being outnumbered over 20 to 1! It's great when you get two sets of fans trying desperately for 90 mins to drown each other out, and for hours/days before and after the game, but in places like Italy and Spain they think it's enough to just wave banners and blow whistles - come on guys!

Of course British clubs fans are loud. (Just look at the video I posted)I agree Its the singing thats the most important.

When Liverpool scored against Leverkeusen last year at Anfied one was flare was lit in the kop, the bloke that lit it got immediately got kicked out and banned, and UEFA fined the club. But you look at Italian Clubs fans in European Competition, its more than one flare and you wonder if UEFA have did anything and also if you watched the UEFA cup final of last year in Rotterdam you would of notice one section of the ground looked like it was on fire because of the flares. Have UEFA did anything?

When Newcastle went to Milan they threw a flare into the Newcastle section, as well as throwing coins and piss and all sorts into our section. UEFA did nothing, until recently, when they finally gave the club a 46,000 euro fine. But I doubt that'll hurt them much!

Btw, I'll have a look at your video now, if I can get it to work. I'm going to Uni in Liverpool later this year, so I'll try to get tickets in the away end at Anfield and Goodison.
EDIT: That's an odd thing to chant at a game, but Liverpool is renowned for it's music (apparently the city has produced more musical number ones than any other city in the world). My only experiences of terraces were when I was a kid in the Milburn stand at St James Park, before all the seating. The atmosphere was mental when we scored (my first ever game we beat Everton 1-0) and I got lifted off my feet for a few minutes in the celebrations. For most of the game I was too small to see anything so I had to climb onto the fences and watch it from there - I thought I would get crushed to death at times but it was fantastic overall.

How loud do away fans get in the Nou Camp? Cause I know the stadium is huge but the atmosphere is pathetic.

I think no atmosphere matches the Old Firm Derby, its scarves + flags + banners + singing. Just Brilliant! Its so hostile, feels almost theres gonna be a war.

I went to the Nou Camp in December to watch Newcastle play and the atmosphere was shite. We were about half a bloody mile from the pitch and despite season ticket holders having free entry to champions league games, half the Barca supporters didn't even attend. Meanwhile in our end there weren't enough spaces because Newcastle fans who had bought tickets in the home section were being escorted into the away end.

As for the Old Firm game, I've never been, but it seems there is a good degree of chanting. But with at least 4 games a season (!) and what-with them sharing a city it's different to what we have here on Tyneside/Wearside. Here the battle lines are clearly drawn, we have our territory, they have theirs, and for most of the year the people never come into contact (they hate each other). On matchday, when we do, it's absolutely mental. It's a rivalry which dates back hundreds of years. The Glasgow rivalry is full of religious undertones, the game is played too often and the fans are interspersed throughout Scotland, England and Ireland, as well as Glasgow. One day I'll go to an Old Firm game and see for myself, but I have to say I've been disappointed the last few old firm games with the atmosphere on screen, it looks pretty rubbish and overrated to be honest! Only a few chants repeated throughout the game, long periods of silence and the majority of the stadium sitting down! Not really what I've been led to believe, but you can't trust what you see on a screen, one day I'll go for myself (I support Celtic) I can imagine it's pretty hard to get tickets though, it's like that with any rivalry but espescially clubs with supporters throughout the country and abroad, like Rangers, Celtic, Liverpool, Manchester, Arsenal etc. When they have a derby with their local rival, you not only have locals trying to get tickets but people from around the country.

From what I've heard the most fierce matches involve clubs like Milwall and Stoke City, who don't have fans that aren't really from the city and don't have the passion of the city/town. That's a good thing about Newcastle/Sunderland, it's unspoilt. I can imagine at Man Utd/Man City derbies and Celtic/Rangers derbies you get a lot of wankers who've seldom even been to Manchester or Glasgow ruining the atmosphere. You also get those kind of derbies televised all the time, they get better publicity because they have bigger fanbases. I don't know about the 'best derby' but the Old Firm derby must be up there somewhere.
