i think there are 2 possibilties for the meaning behind the statement "if it werent for my horse, i wouldnt have spent that year in college"

1. she got the money to go to college by either selling her horse, winning prize money or a scholarship from her horse to allow her to have enough funds to attend college.

2. something about her horse intersted her enough to attend a higher learning institution to learn more about her horse or a way to help her horse.
