Unless I understand gating wrong, which is, of course, possible.

And I'm afraid u are.
There's two types of Gates, well acctually 3 but we won't bring Billy Boy into this disscussion.

Ur talking about the Gate on Compressors and such.

The other gate we are talking about works like this.
U load up a String sample or maybe a Vocal sample.
Apply the gate effect to it and it basicly mutes the sample in a rhythm that u program your self.

So let say the string with out gate goes like this:

Doooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Apply the gate effect and it will go like this:

Dooo o o o o oooo o o o o oooo

Hope this makes any sence.

I still don't get it... that just sounds like my gate with the threshold set high enough to kill any sound. What does the type of gate you are describing actually do to the sound wave?

This page describes what I am talking about :

Most of the times I either use a tempo-synched LFO on the volume (1/8). Another easy way is sending part of the signal to a chopper / slicer working at 1/8. The dry signal will make sure it doesn't completely vanish and the effected signal strengthens the pad inbetween beats.

There's a sweet demo of sidechain gating using a peak detector module in FurityLoops. I used to use it quite a bit in FruityLoops world. These days, I find that particular effect a tad too grating, and I prefer using complex envelopes such as the ones Absynth provides.

Speaking of Fruity is there a better gate module for VST use. Kind like the way Cubase's Midi Gate is?

If you want a plugin to do the gating for you, try scuzzphat cos it's amazing, and free

Hehe, I use those plugins sometimes...they're very useful and unique.
