He's Alberto Santos Dumont, one of the greatest Brazilians ever born. He invented about 100 different things (if you're using a wristwatch, be thankful to him ), and in Brazil and France he's considered the inventor of the airplane (although we know how important the Wright Brothers were as well). Santos Dumont was born in July the 20th of 1873. It all started in France when he was hired by "Lechambre & Machuson" to fly in a balloon (it was a test drive of a model he was working on actually). Later on, after winning prizes with his zeppelins (is this how you call a "balloon with an engine" in English? ) he built the 14-bis. It flew 90 cm high for 100 meters (speed: 37,5 km/h), in Bagatelle camp (Paris). Unlike the Wright Brothers (who had just 5 witnesses), thousands of people saw him and the International Avation Federation considered it the first flight with something-heavier-than-the-air ever.
