i have another semester after this...then I'm done college for now. Then again, if I had not been to college, I don't think I would have learned what it takes to run a business, market a business, find a niche and all the other stuff. Then again, I'm in business admin..so if the oppt presents itself down the road, I do know what it takes to run a business but planning and actually completing it are two different things. I've enjoyed what I've learned in college over the past 3 yrs and I don't think I would do anything differently. I'm trained in business and know all about it (as far as schooling is concerned :-)) and it's opened my eyes to the bigger picture. So I'll go against firestarter and say it was all worth it and I've had a great time.

Most might think so... I, for one, do not think that way.

BTW, it's funny how nobody mentions that you need to be smart to be successful. Well, you don't HAVE to be smart(there are many exceptions :rolleyes, but it's definitely important.

I guess everybody wants to be politically correct and just assume that all people have the same abilities and hence the only difference between then is university education and # of certificates they got etc.

Being smart isn't as important as emotional intelligence; or just having the guts to do something you put your mind to.

You don't need guts if you know what you're doing and how it will turn out.

And Pris, yea I should have changed that to most. And, neither do I...

Now about certifications and 3 months courses. It's because of those people who got their certifications and haven't got any education that MOST software right now is SHIT! You think your certification will make you qualified for the job?? No fuckin' way! It might help you find a job, but you'll be FAR FAR less qualified than someone who actually got post-secondary education and doesn't have your stupid certification. SMART employers realize that and will give priority to someone with higher education. The purpose of post-secondary education is not to teach you a particular topic(ie. Oracle). The purpose(at least as it seems to me) is to teach you how to learn. This is FAR FAR more important.

I have a lot of friends who've graduated CS from University of Waterloo last year, when market was at it's worst. They had trouble getting a job, but they GOT it!

Education is THE most important thing for your success and career.

Well that may be good for your friends and I do understand what u are trying to say about education. In my school I have not learned ANYTHING about networking in my first year and I learn it all in my second. What I also was saying is that politics in school is also hidnering a lot of ppl from getting what they want. Like co-op. In my school it is madatory that u take it but guess what, they make u GO OUT AND FIND IT YOURSELF! This is why I think the way I do about school. I know u might say "Then go somewhere else". Can't afford it as many others. I don't like OSAP becasue of the fact it takes forever to pay off and I am not the type who like to be in debt (at this moment) in more that $2000.

About the Oracle comment, I just tried to make a point that schools lie to u for a quick buck and don't care. I am not taking Oracle (thank god) I am taking networking + support TEch. Right now my looks really bad (for now). Maybe it will change who knows. But I still am going to get my certiufications now, get a job, then onceI pay off the little osap I owe I Will go back to school part-time, but not at humber.

To be honest, I am considering doing the same thing as Fantom. Go to Europe.

I'm in the same situation as most of you guys I'm going to seneca for Computer Networking (CTY program), and I must say I enjoy it. The first year I learned nothing new, the 2nd year I learned a bit, but now in the 3rd year of the program we're getting into really interesting stuff. Not many people take the 3 year program, so my classes are only made up of people who are serious about the computer industry. My biggest class is 30people, and the teachers all try and make it a great learning experiance.

For a long time I knew I wanted to work in the computer feild so i've done lots of stuff to aid me in getting a good job after I graduate. I already hold 2 certifications, ready to take the test for a 3rd, and I plan to do my 4th over the summer. I've also worked as a head technitian for a computer store, and currently I do computer/networking consulting for my friend's company. The experiance is there if you try for it, with the current state of the computer feild only the people who really know their shit will be getting decent jobs.

As far as starting your own company goes, i've been working with my friend since he started his 3 years ago. Believe me it's a lot of work. He works almost everyday and is on call all day, it's a pain in the ass but hopefully it'll be worth it for him. There will be jobs we get that net us a nice chunk of cash, but then the next customer turns out to cost you more money in time and labour then the contract was worth. The best way to go is to work in the industry for a couple of years then go out on your own.

Now that you've brough up this subject, I am wondering is there anyone here (or that you know of) that has actually gone thru any of the programs offered at International Academy of Design in downtown? Since those guys seem like the biggest scam ever... and I mean, ever! $15,000 for 9 months of school, and then they kick you out there with a "Good Luck in finding a job now!"...

Education is an investment. The BEST investment!

E-Master, don't let money stop you from getting education. If you want to learn, and are capable of learning, you should do it. It WILL pay off !

im at university in the same computer field lol...

but the way i see it, im in first year and by the time i graduate things should have picked up... every industry undergoes a recession period... and IT is a litle sluggish right now..
.
i gues thats just the reason why ppl are kinda unrestful with schools... it's hard work yes... but it is essential IMO...

Christian Sylvain, director of government relations and public affairs for the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, said the poll shows Canadians value a university education.

"I think Canadians understand that job growth is the strongest in the areas that require a university education. Those that don't have a university education, I think, are starting to realize the labour market is shifting."

Dr. Z is right..

Anybody who doesnt think an education opens doors is being foolish. Sure you can give select examples of people who have an education and currently dont have jobs. And Im really not sure how all those college programs work with hiring so im not really going to comment on those. I mean I can give and example of somebody who went out and got an education and how it benefited him. My dads friend's son worked at a somewhat dead end job and got his company to pay for a queens MBA for him, he went out got the MBA and was then offered a job as Vice predident of Marketing for Microsoft Canada and would be a millionaire in 4 years. Needless to say he took it.

The point is you can give examples of people in either situation, however by and large, and as a whole educated people have far more doors open to them. It may not automatically land you a job, but it will certainly help you. If you look at the MAJORITY of the top people in the hierarchy of companies, they have educations. Now there are a select group of people who work for themselves and do very well for themselves without an education, and that's the best thing for them. Do you NEED an education, No. But it is harder to succeed.

One more comment. I think the reason successful people seem to think that it was their hard work, is because you never really see what doors COULD have been closed. They dont really know what their past employers wanted and what could have happened if they didnt have a degree. The people who lost opportunities no why. Anyway people should do what they feel is best for them, and not what society tells them. However they should understand the consequences.
