i agree that bowling for columbine was somewhat biased, but to call the movie lies and deception isn't right. i wonder if this writer actually saw the movie....
| quote: | | "To make this strained connection, Mr. Moore tries to make us believe that the two mentally disturbed high school students who massacred their fellow students at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., grew up in a community that has a sinister connection to the military-industrial complex. A Lockheed Martin factory in Littleton manufactures "weapons of mass destruction," Mr. Moore claims. The factory actually makes rockets that carry TV satellites into space. And the very title of Mr. Moore's film is based on a deception. It refers to the bowling class that the Columbine killers supposedly took the morning they committed their murders. The only problem is that they actually cut the class. " |
not in the slightest way did moore try to link the lockeed factory with the shootings. he merely interviewed an employee about the company's philosophy and asked why america needed to construct such weapons in the first place. to try to link a rocket factory with a high school tragedy would be insane... secondly, the title of the movie refers to the fact that the 2 killers were bowling the morning of the shootings, NOT referring to the bowling class they attended at school. there was a point made in the movie that if bowling was the last thing the kids did before the shootings, is bowling to blame for the killings? (i can't exaclty quote the movie...) in any case, this is a trivial point that has nothing to do with the credibility of the movie... the writer is just being nit-picky.
| quote: | "Forbes reports that an early scene in "Bowling" in which Mr. Moore tries to demonstrate how easy it is to obtain guns in America was staged. He goes to a small bank in Traverse City, Mich., that offers various inducements to open an account and claims "I put $1,000 in a long-term account, they did the background check, and, within an hour, I walked out with my new Weatherby," a rifle.
But Jan Jacobson, the bank employee who worked with Mr. Moore on his account, says that only happened because Mr. Moore's film company had worked for a month to stage the scene. "What happened at the bank was a prearranged thing," she says. The gun was brought from a gun dealer in another city, where it would normally have to be picked up. "Typically, you're looking at a week to 10 days waiting period," she says. Ms. Jacobson feels used: "He just portrayed us as backward hicks." " |
ok.. i don't agree with the staged gun buying...BUT, why would the bank sell michael moore out like that?? perhaps they were bribed into changing their story?? the NY times has a lot more money than moore... "He just portrayed us as backward hicks.", why would they agree to doing the scene then?? maybe they were bribed, i dunno... probably not. but the MAIN point here is that you can get a gun from a bank.... does anyone else find that somehow dangerous?

err... i guess this site is a little more thorough in its criticisms.... wow...

- I also watched when Moore said that. First I was like ohh the usual blablabla.. but when I paid attention to what he was saying I was like.. OOOHH DAAAAAAAM!!!!!!!!!!! this guy had it going!! I heard the boooes but I also heard clapping, it was like a 50/40 thing.. 50 boos and 40 clapping, I think many agreed but where just shy to clap, I saw some of the artists faces and they were like .. oh damm hehehehe..
My opinion is, there has to be someone like Moore to stand up and say what he said. Even though I found it like kind of strong and corageous to say what he said, I find that what he said about the FICTITUOUS ELECTIONS was sooo right.. hehehehe thats true, come on!!.
On the other side, saying that to an American audience in times of war, may have been a little off, BUT, if he believes thats the truth, and was willing to represent those against what Bush is doing, and show that side of view, then mad props to Moor.
There were many artists who showed their position against war in various ways/words. Like I saw this one artist who I forgot the name.. put her head down and showed the peace sign, and this other guy from " Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN" who gave a small speach about peace.. and then ended "against war" he got lots of clapping!!!!!.. also what the guy from THE PIANIST.. that was a hit to everyone's heart.
