As much as I like to support artists and record labels, and believe they deserve compensation for all their hard work, for many, many people there is just no other way to hear music at home than besides mp3. With CD's at $15+ a pop (for more often than not, just one disc!) that people often purchase for only just a few songs, and vinyl at $10 that again is often bought for just one side or remix, how can the music industry really expect us to afford all that? Oh, and it doesnt help much that theres not a record store within 60 miles of my house, many many older tunes are pretty much impossable to find, and that you cant find much more than a small rack 70% filled with ibiza/super rave/whatnot at any CD store ive been to around here.
Music is meant to be shared, and I agree there is a serious problem with hardcore pirates selling bootleg copies on the street and leaking unreleased albums, but average music fans can rarely afford to buy much. And I would hate to beleive that some artists would rather people not listen to enjoy their music if they cant afford to rush out and buy it asap. Btw if your artist of choice is signed to the RIAA you can bet they wont get a damn cent for the CD you buy anyways.
Just my $0.23 (adjusted for inflation )
