*Ahem*
Dr. Atkins himself has had a heart attack recently.
It's great to point out that refined sugar is bad and all....but of course Mr. Atkins himself will do anything possible to sell his diet. I mean come on. Living on a diet is not going to make you lose wieght. Once you get off it, and become obsessed with your weight because all that effort put in was lost, let's see how hard it will be for you to STAY OFF a diet again. Listen, take it from experience, the only way to lose weight is to have a healthy balanced diet. Limiting yourself to certain foods like "refined sugar" will certainley keep you satisfied but balanced. Some of us have really easy flowing metabolisms, and some of us don't, but I know one thing...that Atkins diet is a quick and easy way out to nowhere. I mean, how long can one live on Aspartame and a huge rack of lamb? YUK!
Good luck.

P.S. And by the way, Fruits are absolutely NOT allowed in the Atkins diet.

I don't know what Aspartame is but since meat makes up at least 70% of my food intake, I think I could live with a huge rack of lamb for quite a while.

Atkins isn't just a diet it's a lifestyle change. You dont get off it when you reach your desired weight, you resume eating only as much carbs as your body can handle to maintain your weight.

Oh, and fruits are allowed after the induction phase.

Sweet man. I've started Atkins a couple of weeks ago myself. Lost about 12 pounds so far. By the way, essentially it is called the Caveman diet (since cavemen, if there were any :P, didn't know how to cultivate crops, therefore there was no carbohydrate).

Congratulations man, thats excellent.

I have to say something about this or any diet though because as most people know around 90% of diets fail.

The one thing about Atkins is yes it works great, but you have to be dedicated to living this diet lifestyle for life. Otherwise plan on putting back all the weight you lose plus often a few more pounds.

I know 2 people who went on Atkins and both of them after doing the diet for 5 months and 1 year respectively have gone off the diet and put all the weight back on plus more.

You have to ask yourself can you live your life with a restrictive carb diet? If the answer is anything less then "most definately" then I'd suggest changing to tried and true ways of losing weight.

Losing weight is a change in the mind first and foremost. You have to accept change and change your patterns of behavior that led you to end up overweight.

I find anything that restricts you to a way of eating will ultimately fail miserably. Thats why I'd suggest a smarter way of living like allowing yourself one day a week to eat whatever junk food you want and being strict the other 6 days like in that Body for Life program.

I personally loathe Atkins and his diet because of the low success rate and how he always avoids answering the success rate after 2yrs on the diet because he knows how horrible those rates are.

Anyways, skip any diets because they are temporary solutions.. You have to make a change first and foremost with your lifestyle and your patterns of behavior that lead you to bad habbits.

Solve those issues and you solve the weight problems. Check out some psych books in Amazon, and also check out the Body for Life program.

Good luck in whatever you choose, no doubt the battle to lose weight is one of the most difficult things to go through these days.

Oh yeah one more thing anyone wanting to seriously lose weight and get in healthy shape has to work out at least 3 times a week, and make sure that you are doing weight lifting with cardio as to get the most benefit.

People who only do cardio/diet, diet; are seriously doing more harm since they are not only losing fat but also lean muscle mass which is the last thing you want to do.

Adkins may call it a "lifestyle change", but it's still called "Adkins Diet" with the word "diet" there. So yes, it is a diet, and it is doomed to fail from the start because diets of any kind simply do not work. That's been proven again and again, but unfortunately our society just doesn't seem to get it. We are all in for the "quick fix". We all have to have things NOW. This cultural attitude of ours really doesn't do much for our all around health - psychological, mental, and physical.

I'm sorry to break this to you, but statistics don't lie: 98% of individuals that diet put back on the fat they lost within 18 months, and 87% put back on more weight they began with within that same time period. You want a diet, then you're fighting nearly impossible odds. Simply saying that you want to lose weight does little to your longterm health. You have to change your life around permanently. There's a lot of psychology involved here, but much of your habits need to be undone permanently. There's a lot of brain synapses and patterns that are set from these particular habits that must be broken and redone to make a healthy lifestyle. Adkins doesn't do that, nor does anything with the word "diet" on it. I haven't even discussed all the side effects and potential physiological harm the Adkins Diet can do (damage to liver, ketosis/ketoacidosis, etc.), nor will I fill up space to explain it here. The bottom line that you need to remember is that being a part of a diet will doom you to fail. You really have to change your life around completely.

And yes, that does include eating better and more wisely. You can talk to a dietician about that. But that also includes exercise, which you cannot ignore if you want to change your life and become healthier. You can talk to a doctor or better yet, a personal trainer about this. Or you can PM me if you really want.

Good luck.
