its only useful for putting a really rare track or your own track on vinyl though... its not like it will stop people from just going out and buying vinysl - and you'ld be foolish to believe it would.

I would assume that the major (legal) use of this kind of service would be to promote your own songs, by having them pressed to vinyl. You would also be able to play your own tunes in a club without having the shame of having to use a CDR (it's a difference of opinion whether using CDRs is shameful in a club )..

Here's my point.. From the website:
quote:
The process is unbelievably easy. Simply upload your MP3 or Audio CD files and we’ll send you a 12” Vinyl.
..
Before placing an order please make sure your audio files are restricted to the allowable time limits and that they are in MP3 format.

If you are going to be hammering out your own tunes like nothing at clubs after your very own vinyl has been made (and I'm sure you would), then it would be an incredibly bad idea to have your vinyl pressed from such a format as MP3. It is common knowledge (or damn well should be) that MP3 files lose a lot of low-frequency notes (to drive subwoofers effectively) as well as high-frequency notes.

For anybody who knows enough about audio, limiting their customers to only using MP3 cannot be a good move. Whatever happened to such immensely superior formats as Ogg Vorbis and even FLAC.

For a site that insists you upload your files, they do warn "In order to achieve the best sound quality your MP3 should preferebly have a high bit rate (High Quality)", but it only makes sense to use a format that gives you the best sound quality per bit, and that's not MP3 for sure.

Damn, I sound cocky..

I think this is a useful service because:

1) It can used to put your own productions on 12" like many people have said

2) You can put a track on vinyl that wasn't released on vinyl. eg - maybe you bought the cd single but would rather not spin with a CDJ... it is well within your rights to then back up your cd single onto vinyl format, since you paid for the cd in the first place.

Regarding the initial flaming of this - I seriously doubt people are going to stop buying vinyls and just press their mp3s instead. It costs 36 pounds or something right?

What I would love to do is put Ayumi - Trauma (Dumonde) on it, but that's copyright infringement right? even tho it wasn't released?

the material is copyrighted but im not sure if its illegal to copy sumthing which has never been released to make money off, even tho you cant copy the music by making a similar tune if u get what i mean.

in hindsight, if u r an amature artist with 4 tunes of 7 mins or less, you are laughing really.

75 dollars for 4 tunes on one vinyl

which is

50 quid for 4 tunes on one vinyl

which is

12.50 per tune. fuck all really

Okay, how rediculous can the mp3 vs. vinyl situation get?

I mean I love the quality of vinyl, and I spin it when I actually have the vinyl. However, nothing beats having 5000 mp3s available to throw on at a club. Unless someone was going to have their own material put on wax, I really don't see this as a being a progressive service.

All I can see is people going nuts trying to get their latest mp3s cut to vinyl for their next gig. Just bring your laptop, get PCDJ, and the Newmark addon and throw on the track. Either that, or Final Scratch (Mmmmmmmm..)

My main problem with this is the fact that an mp3 is usually ripped from vinyl, but at a considerable loss of quality. Why waste everyone's time by putting that crap on to a vinyl....
