not that great..but it does the job well

i did read somewhere that someone managed to get xp running on a p166 but it took 30 mins to boot up, due to the differences in cpu design from the early pentiums to the pentium 2's and 3's

OK, recently I've had a huge HD crash and lost 44 GB of MP3's, movies and games. I was running Windows ME which I had in this computer since August 2001 before this struck. Unfortunately I've long since lost my copy of Windows ME and have been forced to install a copy of Windows 95 which came with the computer I previously had which I bought in 1997.

So basically, should I stick with Windows 95 or upgrade to something newer when I get the chance? So far 95 seems fine but I haven't installed very much so any problems are probably forthcoming. Since Windows 95 is nearly 8 years old, what are the main disadvantages it has over the later versions?

Don't know much technical information about PC's but I have a 55 GB HD and 240 MB RAM. Would this be enough to run XP smoothly, for example?

Any help is appreciated.

I'd recommend 512MB of RAM (preferably DDR) for it to run smoothly. 256MB is good enough for it to work decently though.

Your processor should be fine for "smooth enough" operation as long as it's 500MHz or above.

He has had his pc since 1997, DDR ram wasnt even invented then, and id doubt it would fit into his mobo!!for everyday use the difference between ddr and sdram is not that big, for stuff like music editing, photoediting, playing with large spreadsheets and word documents then the difference is more noticable

i have used 98, ME, XP and XP Pro and out of all of those the only OS i havnt had any problems with what so ever is ME. So i am currently on that. I dont ever get blue screens, and i cant remember the last time my comp crashed. It runs a lot smoother than when i had XP on thats for sure. The only OS i hav left to try on this comp is 2000.

I don't doubt what you say, but that's hard to believe.

I've used Windows 3.0, Windows 3.11, Windows NT 3.51, Windows MT 4.0, Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows ME.

Before my HD crash I made several virtual machines using the program "Virtual PC" for a little bit of nostalgic fun.

Windows 3.11:

Windows NT 3.51 - I found this OS to be very really good actually:

Unfortunately I can't run any PC emulating software on Windows 95 so that's my fun with these OS's over for just now.
