The main gnres and some examples:
Uplifting: Nu-NRG, Pulser, Ralphie B, Ronski Speed.. basically 4/4 beat, lots of yummy buildups and epic, melodic synths @ 137-140 bpm
Epic: Uplifting trance that has been 'canonized' so to speak  such as Armin - Communication, System F - Solstice, yadda ydda ydda...I would also place L-Vee and MIKE productions here, since it doesnt seem right to call them progressive or uplifting... and they just have that 'epic' feel.
Progressive: James Holden, Gabriel & Dresden, Parker & Wilson, Max Graham.. basically still 4/4 beats but slower (128-132 bpm), less noticable synths/buildups, more funky and creative basslines, tend to be longer than uplifting as well.
Tek-Trance: Marco V., most of Picotto's stuff, some Timo Maas, Marco is best example though... basically a hard techno beat with synths and melodies layered over it that make it sound trancey.
Goa/Psychadelic: Infected Mushroom, Astral Projection, Man With No Name, early Darren Tate stuff.. very fast, with a typical bassline and similar drumkits.. just listen to some infected mushroom and you'll understand.
Hard/Acid: Kai Tracid, SHOKK, Chromedioxide II, Hennes & Cold, Dj Scot Project... faster than uplifting, with a typical drumkit and an 'acid' synth effect, the best example of which is Derb - Derb (arome Mix) These will all be very high energy and layered with heavily distorted synth effects.
Techno: Dj Rush, Chris Liebing, some Picotto (Liberty Drum, etc), Carl Cox, Sven Vath
... very fast, very high energy, virtually no synth, maybe a vocal sample or two, characterized by bass and drums in a 4/4 beat. Keep in mind i am not including techno such as Aphex Twin/Fatboy Slim/Orbital since that is a whole other genre entirely.
Hardhouse: Tony de Vit, Dj Irene, Fergie... like techno except more samples.. really not too much difference. Techno tends to be darker/more evil.
Prog-House: MoShic, X-Press 2, Green Velvet, Paranoid Jack, Deep Dish, Steve Lawler.. basically imagine a slower, funkier prog trance.. that's how i would describe it. A lot of artists really blur the line between the two.
House: Robbie Riviera, Olav Basoski, Bad Boy Bill, etc etc. radio house, too many and too diverse to try to sum up.. you know what im talking about.
Eurohouse: Trance, but not.. is mostly dead by now, but flourished in the late 90's.. included names like Dj Quicksilver,
Lightforce, Brooklyn Bounce (who have totally changed their style since then), Pulsedriver, Sash!,... ah the good old days.. had that characteristic 'bouncey' bass.. Basically a much slower uplifting trance.
Tribal: take progressive and add tribal drums. (Lawler does this a lot)
Breaks: Hybrid, grayarea.. duh, of course this means they don't use a 4/4 beat... if they did i would call them progressive.
Uplifting Progressive: this is a name i made up to include impossible to place tunes that seem to be the norm of today like Cor Fijneman - Exhibition, Scott Bond vs Solar Stone - 3rd Earth, Armin - Song for the Ocean, Lost Lynx - Seasons (Three dRives), and the like.. they are too progressive to be uplifting, but too uplifting to be progressive This is also where i would place most of PvD's productions.. but this was someting i just invented, so whatever.
*Disclaimer: lots of artists have done too many different things to be able to be clumped in one genre.. here i am thinking particularly Sasha/Digweed and Way Out West. Armin would also fit this category, since he went from house to epic to uplifting to progressive...
