mainly as intel demanded p4 have the extra 12v line from the powersupply to the motherboard, and amd didnt demand it and its only on newer amd motherboards they are using this

the BIG advantage intel have over amd is the fact that they have hyper-threading on their side (multiple pipelines etc reh reh reh).. the new chips support this, however most programs (as yet) do not. XP doesn't take full advantage of hyperthreading, so atm i'd tend to opt for a socketa system. Ive just built one myself. Also, another thing to bear in mind is the fsb speed, the new barton chips (2800 / 3000) support 333, which means u can run ddr 2700 in it in sync with ur cpu..

I'd go for amd myself, but its all a matter of personal preference

got my P4 2.6ghz today

Pretty impressed

general specs

Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz CPU 512K
Gigabyte GA 8PE667 Pro with audio, lan, usb 2
asus 64 meg magic vid card
enermax 350 power
LG dvd
LG 48X r
120gb HD (from old comp)

the only complaint is that i hoped the p4 would be alot quieter, however the cpu fan for the cpu is pretty loud and is the only thing thats making noise.

amd and intel are both great. ive owned amd's before and they are great and this intel cpu is great too.

This will be too do with the tower u have it in, and the fan on the proccessor as jon says. Get an expensive fan. I have a 2.3ghz p4 and it is quiet as hell, but i didnt build it. So that explains why
