the BIG advantage intel have over amd is the fact that they have hyper-threading on their side (multiple pipelines etc reh reh reh).. the new chips support this, however most programs (as yet) do not. XP doesn't take full advantage of hyperthreading, so atm i'd tend to opt for a socketa system. Ive just built one myself. Also, another thing to bear in mind is the fsb speed, the new barton chips (2800 / 3000) support 333, which means u can run ddr 2700 in it in sync with ur cpu..
I'd go for amd myself, but its all a matter of personal preference
