some numbers to throw out here

*Arizona Diamondbacks (71-55)
Arizona Diamondbacks have the best record in the NL, and 4 games behind Boston for best record in the ML.

Looking at their batting roster, it looks like no one will hit the 100 run mark. Eric Byrnes has 76 to lead the team. Leading batter on the team is Orlando Hudson with a .300. Other than Eric Byrnes .299, every other starter is batting below .275.

As for their pitching, top 3 pitchers are Brandon Webb(13-8), Livan Hernandez(9-7), and Doug Davis (10-11). Besides Webb(2.63) and Randy Johnson(3.81), no starter has an ERA below 4.

*Seattle Mariners (70-52)
Seattle Mariners are 2 games out of Anaheim for 1st place in the AL West.

Looking at their batting roster, Ichiro will go over 100 runs, 200 hits, and has a .346 BA at the moment. Richie Sexson leads the team with 20 HRs, yet has that atrocious .209 BA. 3 Mariners (Guillen, Beltre, Ibanez) has 70+ RBIs.

As for their pitching, best 3 pitchers are Jarrod Washburn(8-10), Miguel Batista(13-8), and Felix Hernandez (9-6). Out of all their starters, Hernandez has the lowest ERA (3.94), then they have Washburn(4.16), Batista(4.14), Weaver(5.57), and Ramirez(7.15).

luckily, both have power closers(Valverde, Putz).

just something to eat your minds, thinking how these 2 teams are tops in the ML at the moment.

overlooked the standings. but still it's surprising to see Arizona still alive in the playoff hunt.

fucking Angels and Mariners....I'm so indifferent toward that whole AL West Division (I think it's crap), but those Angels really have the Yankees' number and nobody can explain why.

Anyone think Seattle will come back to earth in the next month? It seems like they can't lose lately.

and what the hell is up with Boston's schedule? Yes I'm biased but come on...look at the absolute CRAP they're playing the last 5-6 weeks compared to the Yankees. 12 games against Tampa in the 2nd half is hardly balanced scheduling.

i think major league baseball needs to do something to help the pitchers. it's outrageous how many few starting pitchers have an ERA below 4. it's amazing. baseball has turned into a swing the ball as hard as you can type of mentality.

in the AL especially so yeah. But that's the DH right...personally I like the DH but I'm a big AL fan so I don't pay much attention to these calls to get rid of it.

What really gets me these days is that hardly any pitchers ever go beyond 6 or 7 innings. The bullpen is now as important as ever if your starter can only throw 5 innings on 95 pitches and then gets yanked. How many pitches was Babe Ruth throwing in a game in the 1920s? How many pitches did Whitey Ford, Nolan Ryan or Sandy Koufax throw each game? I bet they weren't limited to 90-100 pitches like so many of these less tough modern hurlers.

just raise the mound back to the level in the 60s. that'll take care of this offensive explosion to an extent

why'd they lower it in the first place...to encourage more hitting? I never pitched in baseball and the mounds on our half-clay diamonds weren't maintained very well so I've never been exactly sure what advantage a high mound gives. I can take a guess...something about angles and velocity?

During Interleague play this year, the Mets faced all 4 playoff teams from last year. It happens.

it does...but Tampa are always a garbage team and everyone knows that...it just seems odd that Boston get double the games against basically a minor league team year in, year out in the second half when it's most important. I'm just bitching because a more balanced schedule would have made the AL East race more interesting.
