FYI, usually a film needs to take in about 33 percent higher than listed cost to break even for a variety of reasons, some of them legitimate ie production costs dont take into account some advertising and post production ancillary costs, and some less legitimate having to do with financial accounting measures ie they actually loan themselves the money and charge interest on it etc. Additionally, some of those receipts are not going be completely recouped by the studio etc. So it definitely needs some help to break even. That being said, if the movie gets a cult following, it becomes much easier to sell a studio on a sequel. If you see a special edition or collecters edition BR disk in the works 3-6 years down the line, its a great sign of a possible sequel as the studio now sees additional financial reward in the franchise.

Dammit, you beat me to it! A studio can easily rack up 10-15% extra purely in marketing costs, which are never included as part of the official budget cost.

For instance, with Pearl Harbor, they were freaking out so much about the big budget ($140m) film tanking at the box office that they spent a ridiculous amount on marketing. On one event, where they hired an Aircraft Carrier and flew a bunch of veterans to the event.

That single event cost $40m, a and the overall costs all said and done were actually somewhere around $240. When you think it only took $183m in the USA that's not a good cinema yield.

However the DVD sales made it quite profitable in the end with a gross of over $400m.

The good news (for Dredd fans) is that marketing can be such an expense, that anything with a cult following or at least a recognisable name in the market means has a lot of leg work already done for the next film. It means that the chances of a sequel would be a no-brainer if they even get a half decent return from the original.

kinda on the same topic although much more impressive was Flight. How they managed to make that for 30 million is beyond me. Denzel,Zemeckis , silvestri .... There is no way you could watch that and think it had a 30 m budget.

Haven;t seen it yet, but on paper it is quite a feat.

The only thing is, I've seen countless times, films get made for pennies where it should have cost millions. My old boss would take on at least 3 to 4 projects a year for nothing. I mean nada. All the recording, overdubs the mixing

Just either because it was a project he wanted as something interested him about (or sometimes didn't want someone else to get the gig - i.e. sidelining the compeition) or because he wanted to work with that producer or director (i.e. to ingratiate himself for future projects that had big budgets) or sometimes purely as a favor to the studio so next time he gets a shoe-in for the next gig.

Directors do the same.

Also, it can be a real financial boon for studio; Take Flight for instance. it cost $30m to make, probably another 10-15 in extra costs (marketing, ancillaries, etc), so $45m tops, but has already taken $90+m in the USA alone, and that's before DVD/BR/VoD etc.

That's a big profit for the studio, and again, probably why the favors were done by all involved. Denzel gets the next action/thriller gig which pays $10m, silvestri gets a nice gig, and zimeckis gets first dibs on a new script.
