Follow up message from Laurent:

Dear friends,

I’m writing this as I’m in the middle of nowhere in the countryside reflecting on things while spending a bit of time with my family.

Thank you for your incredible support of the past few days.
I am overwhelmed by the big amount of comments and reactions that I generated in the first days of this funding campaign. And by the fact we reached over 10% of the goal in less than 2 days.

I’m sure there’s a lot of questioning and I saw a few comments and conclusions made by people who don’t know much about my story. I feel like I owe you all an explanation because with a bit of time I thought my way of communicating about this matter was awkward.

I would like to make it as short as possible and don’t want to name and shame anyone. The action I’m taking was made of nothing but good intentions towards anyone involved. And I wish I didn’t have to involve any of you.

First thing to clarify is the “donations”. As I’m not allowed by go fund me to promise you anything in return, I had to pull lines stating that your money will never be used by myself. As of today I have no access to this money and I don’t want to. My goal is to get a loan for that exact amount and your support is exactly showing investors that the asset is worth it. After which, I’ll pay everyone back. Due to my situation I couldn’t get a loan from my local banks. So whether we reach the goal or not, people will get their money back. It wasn’t possible to create anything like a Kickstarter campaign at this point because it takes time that I don’t necessarily have. My rights are on borrowed time. Read on for further explanation.

The second thing I need to address is my social and financial situation. Most people know me for my records but have absolutely no idea that the past two years on top of making records, I have had a few jobs on the side to pay my bills and my taxes in the country with the highest tax in the world. During COVID I was happy to have a day job as a public school teacher, was really happy with it, I’m not ashamed by this situation at all. Many people in the comments spread the idea that I’m super rich and that I’m playing people. Nothing could be further from the truth. I spend the past 20 years covering losses for some very nasty people who actually abused me. I kept reinvesting the money I earned into my career and not into stupid cars and toys. My family and I live with the bare minimum and I don’t even own a compact car to cut the costs. I got rid of most of my music gear to pay bills. Some people mentioned that I’d make ten grand per gig… which isn’t true at all. My MainStage gig at tml 2018 brought me 800€ gross ( 40% taxable). I have evidence of it. And I never complained about this either. I never made big money throughout my career and never openly complained about it. That’s life and I accept it very well. Not jealous at those who do make big money, either.

The third thing I have to address is my purpose and the origins of my action. While I have no problem giving my rights to a record label, said record label has to take care of my catalog as a serious asset. In 2016 it was still the case. Three years later the situation started degrading. Only a few % of my tracks are being exploited. And here comes the worsening event. The catalog is owned by two entities fighting possibly to court as we speak, and because I don’t want to be part of a court case, or a possible takeover of the entire catalog including mine, by future third parties in the case the catalog needs to be sold to actually stop the legal fight between the owners. Further, the value of my catalog is degrading because both parties fighting for ownership aren’t in state to actively exploit it. As a piece of evidence, I have several people claiming they wanted to use some of my music on their label with top remixers features, labels are big fans and friends, and they never got a reply. I can’t let this happen without taking action however I wish I didn’t have to. I’ll spare you the abusive events I’ve been through during the 25 years of business relationship, because I don’t want them to have their weight in my actual campaign. As much as possible I want to avoid giving some people ammo.

So I’ll conclude by saying this. Had I really wanted to play my fans, knowing I’m not even touching the money on go fund me, taking all the business and financial risks on me in the future, and knowing that I have a day job or two just like you all to cover my costs and keep my family safe… knowing all that, I would try to play my fan base differently, don’t you think?

My only goal is to get out of this legal fight I don’t want to be involved with as an artist, asking temporary support to my fan base before rewarding it with future music plans such as 8 new tracks on top labels, plus a sequel album that’ll make noise in 2024 and that’s nearly half done, while reimbursing every penny that my fan base has donated so that we could celebrate 25 years airwave next year in full.
I was young and stupid enough to believe in some people for over 20 years who purposely gaslit me, however it’s my responsibility, and I admit it. Weren’t it for this involvement into something no one needs to be part of, I wouldn’t even bother asking anything from you even temporarily because indeed, it’s technically my “fault” that I got gaslit.

Last thing I wanna tell you is that re-recording 800 productions minimum isn’t an option in my case. And I don’t want these productions to sound inferior either. A risk I can’t take. I know that many mentioned the idea, but technically far from possible.
Knowing all this, I hope I informed you well, that’s as good as I could at present time. I believe I’m not good at communicating, especially on such short notice, but at least I’m trying my best.

And here’s Myla, my daughter, 14. Say hi to her if you like. Remember that behind this business thing, there are people too and not machines. I’m just another individual trying to move on, so thanks for respecting this. And I know that some disagree with me and my methods and thats fine, I just would like you to consider respecting my choices whether the above convinced you or not.

Many thanks once again to the all of you. Having a community like you around is invaluable, and like expressed before I wish I didn’t have to get you involved into this.
👉🏻 if you feel like helping me out: check in the comments for the gofundme link.

Ah, was wondering about that. Thought 'Taylor Swifting' his catalogue might have been an option, but guess that'd be too much trouble. Especially if he's apparently sold much of the gear his older material was made on.

Almost forgot to mention, but this is Laurent's new project R3tr0nauts - This Is The Way played at ASOT 1133.

I love his choice to make something happy again, bringing back some late 90's club vibes.

And another message by Laurent:

Dear friends,
Once again here I am. Happy to read your messages. ❤
I had to face a lot of offensive reactions on the funding campaign, and I was ready for them so they didn’t surprise me much. I can’t get everyone to be in my shoes even for a minute and that’s inevitable that some people have to vent their own stress and frustration, it's their way to deal with their own struggles. A lot of people around us live with their own wounds, and it’s sometimes such a burden, so heavy to carry that it transforms people for better and worse. I know this because I used to have this rage in myself for decades and used to vent the exact same way.

There’s a lot to learn from this animosity as well. The fact that requesting help from a 229k fan base can upset some people because they feel like someone like me can’t be in their shoes, is one of those things I learned. I truly wish I could get them to see my perspective after 3 years without gigs and I can definitely see theirs, and the financial stress they are probably facing everyday, and I’m facing the exact same stress everyday, with a day job like theirs to pay bills and taxes, sometimes 3x their tax rate.
I was accused of not working either, which I believe is very odd, considering the amount of releases since 2019, the 5 synthesisers I worked on for third parties, the sound packs I've done, and the two day jobs I have ever since had on top of those to keep my family safe. Getting paid for the real value of one's work however, is sometimes a bit complicated and exhausting nowadays. But I can't complain about it.

It also looks like social media fed timelines with my post further than I had expected, while actually, my goal was to reach out to my fan base only, and not people who don’t know anything about my story or my music. That is awkward and unfortunate. I didn’t boost that first post, everything happened organically, and I honestly don’t know how a platform such as Fb can just spread this around people who do not care at all and probably felt harassed. I feel sorry about the inconvenience but it wasn’t my responsibility at all.
I saw a lot of colleagues in the post as well, supporting or not. Some of them stated I was lucky to be there before them and that I got all this money for my record sales. I had to remind that after all they were getting three or four times my fees for almost two decades which is in comparison much more (up to 3x as much) than I have ever earned with me record sales, something I never complained about, while losing big in unpaid royalties they were mentioning about (compilations, cd, vinyl sales), billed or not, at the peak of my career, which put me into persistent financial trouble for the decades that followed due to the giant gaslighting I put myself into. Not even beginning about the state of my mental health during all those years. But I know some of my colleague DJ's are suffering an awful lot.

A lot of colleagues also supported me (sending me a lot of messages on WhatsApp too which really felt heartwarming ) because they’ve known me for so many years and could see how I’m stuck with this story as a pan attached to my ankle. All I want is to get out of a very vicious circle.

In all cases, there was reaction, and that's already something positive on its own. And most of it was extremely encouraging.
This led me to the conclusion that a lot of people make assumptions on our lives based on their own reality, which could be very different from ours, and I plaid guilty for doing the same at times before quickly making up my mind. We're human after all.
Further I need to take action and show a lot of people that I’ve never done this with money in mind and apparently I now have to prove that I’m not a scammer to a chunk of my followers being misled by haters commenting.

I had a few chats here and there with my future event promoters and have decided that all my gigs already scheduled for 2023 and 2024, and future ones, will be entirely free of charge for promoters, excluding travel and accommodation, until further notice. That’s how much I care about money. ❤

I get paid almost nothing for record sales and streams, and will now be happy giving up on my performance fees so that everyone, supporting or not, can see how much I care about money after all.
Let me continue this post with a few real stories of my past.

In 2004 in Birmingham I peformed a combined Live/DJ set that was paid with a bounced check. Promoter brutally told me I'd have to wait for months without giving me any alternative. I never exposed him because I cared more about the people. And paid everyone I had with me.

In 2016, I was in Mexico with many other colleagues. None of us got paid and the only paid headliner didn’t get on his plane. We played more than we had agreed on to compensate for said headliners absence. I made sure everyone in the audience could spend some time with me. This for zero. Nada. No compensation at all. And we had a great time together with 5000 people. I never complained despite the fact the promises of getting us back there couldn’t be kept. None of us did complain.

The fire&ice remix of taste of summer is played by Antwerp fc’s stadium after each and every goal scored by the leagues champion when playing at home. The original producer got thousands in paid royalties thanks to the fire&ice remix and even got his rights back (!!!), while his original never got played in said stadium. Here we are with our 250€ remix fee Jurgen and I. Did I ever complain about it? No. A deal is a deal indeed. Glad I could transform someone’s life with my craftsmanship. That’s a great feeling.

My Estonian gig of 2007 was a huge flop, with the promoter vanishing without paying us, while leaving festival attendees without a party, cancelled. I was one of those guys who decided to play anyway while not getting paid, at a local venue to make people happy. Top names were there and very mad. I wasn’t. I never complained.

I played live and dj gigs continuously for years sometimes with terrible weather, gear broken, stolen, lost, and at terrible fees most of the time. And I never complained either. Promoters who booked me don’t have much to say about the way I behave, do they? Regardless of the fee, the deal, or whatever it is, I never made any of this with money first in mind.

You see, that’s how much I love what I do. So with or without the insults and bad comments based on assumptions , I just want to keep doing just that, piece by piece, building this catalog of music until my very last breath and I still have a lot in the pipeline. Many built houses, I built this catalog and want some of it back for my children.

I’m not demanding people who don’t know me at all to contribute. All I wanted was to ask help from a fan base for just 12 to 16 weeks tops before moving on and paying them back.
And by the looks of it, fan base there is as we’re slowly approaching a non-negligible % of the final goal. Thanks to all contributing, and I repeat that I’m not touching the money ever.
Wish though, just like everyone else, I could have done it thanks to the interest in my music. And I have so much to offer, now and in the future. Read On!

My new R3tr0nauts ep seems to get a lot of praise for which I’m grateful. It was played on ASOT last week, completely out of the blue, no request from me. After years not being featured at all, I’m very grateful! Gives all those tracks that didn’t do as good lately also some exposure, at least. Have you checked out my progressions releases? Some of them are even available as WAV on my site!
And now we’re ready for a new Cape Town track, 15 years after our Aviateur release. And this one is a smack! Sep 8th friends. Be sure not to miss it!

And there’s a special uptempo Airwave bunch coming up right after that. And I'm working on a killer sequel album that will make many very happy.

Need more evidence?
Meanwhile I’ve finished factory presets for an upcoming synthesizer. My 6th job of that kind, did you go check my patches out on the Wavestate and Modwave synths for example? I wish you could have taken that time. What's coming up is even more impressive, and I'm honoured that I could work on such a powerful synth.
Did you also know I produced 6 soundpacks on Splice? Maybe it's worth checking them out!
Or did you check my own soundpacks, or my upcoming ableton live masterclasses? We have plenty of those available. My upcoming Ableton Live 11 Masterclass is on the 26th with link in bio BTW did you notice that?
I’ll post links in the comments. It would be great if you took the time to go check them out. That's also one great way to support me and my career while you get something in return. And I know that, no matter what, without the support of others, I can't keep going in my creative career. I have a lot to give to those who actually want to hear/see it.

Many thanks for your support and your messages. Keep ‘em coming
Talk soon.

I prefer his older tracks. I wish he would make more of those but at the same time I know he can't His bright lines album was good but the recent stuff has been below par and lack the emotions and drive and amazing groove his older tracks did. I mean have a listen to Capetown - Pitstop

I understand he is older now. Now, we just need about 203 people to donate 113 euros and he would reach that level.

It's too short man. I miss those subtle sounds he used to add in his tracks I mean have a listen to Myla's Theme and Pop the Cat's adventure spectacular melodic trancers. Atlas winds before he removed the vocals what an amazing track.

It's going much too slow and is extremely disappointing in my personal view.
Just 180 people donated 19000 Euro of which one person donated 8000 Euro, so there's about 11000 Euro donated by 179 people.
Actually it's not even a donation but a loan. Maybe many didn't understand that. What also made it harder to donate is the fact that you need a credit card. Not everybody has one.

But if 4000 people would donate only 10 Euro he would be there, 4000 is not a crazy amount of 250k followers (and yes even with many fakes as I remember when it was about 30k) and 10 Euro isn't either I think.

So let's buy his new releases also then, I love his Cape Town - Tears Of Jupiter and looking at his latest update it sounds like Laurent is back were we like to see him more.

Well, I would donate more if I could but I would max out my credit card. I donated 2000 euros I am earning minimum wage I won't have enough to pay for my other bills I wish gofundme had a paypal system.

or if we can get about 440 people depositing 50 euros that would reach the target.

Hey there how’s everyone doing?
I have some updates about the go fund me thing.
I recently made a few discoveries and found out a way to actually create a win-win situation for everyone, that also includes reimbursing you.
By the end of October everyone will have their money back from the go fund me platform. Just as I had promised.
From now on you can stop donating. As you can see the link isn’t here anymore and I’ll suspend the campaign in the next few days.
And I’m two thirds there with the new album. Any guesses what it will be called? Comment below
