in belgium it's allso a holiday to remember the end of world war 1
They allways play "the last post" in Ieper where they fought real hard

A fairly decent number of Irish people fought in WWI (when the whole island was under British rule) and to a lesser extent in WWII (when most of the island was free from British rule) on the British side. As well as that, Irish people during both the wars had associations with Germany. Commemorating the people who were killed in these wars is a bit contentious in Ireland because it is seen to be a British thing to do. As I understand it, the money raised from sale of poppies (sold in Britain and parts of Ireland) goes towards British veterans who served in the World Wars, but also those who served since then - including those who did tours in Ireland (post 1969) and in the course of those tours murdered civilians, resistance fighters, etc.

i can see how that would be questionable. My grandpa's family lived in belfast durring WWI but moved to canada before WWII (my other grandad not the one pictured). when WWII came around my grandpa and his brother enlisted but my they kept my grandpa back because he was a doctor and he worked as a doctor for the army and treated soldiers that returned to canada. he has some crazy stories about really questionable lobotamies that he felt were moraly wrong. Anyhow.. he often went back to visit family in ireland but to my knowledge didn't have to deal with the politics between ireland/britan.

OH well hello here i am again.. bumping my remembrance day thread. This holiday is still really important to me, but this year it is tinged with a huge WTF. As you can see above, i posted a picture of my mum's dad who served in the war.. i used to be proud of him, even though i knew he was an abusive alcoholic who treated everyone horribly and eventually died from liver failure. Well, i used to hold on to the fact that he was a war vet and hopefully that would make me overlook his failures as a father and a grandfather. However.. a few days ago i found out that not only was he an abusive alcoholic, but he was also a raging child molester. One of his victims was my cousin, who he apparently molested for years, starting from when she was a baby. She remembers alot of it, and has had extensive therapy. Before he died, she asked him, "why me?" he told her "you're the weak one." (she has cerebral palsy).. so now i've removed his picture everywhere i could, (obviously not quotes) and i don't hope he rests in peace.. anyway...

i'll now focus on the other people in my family and their sacrifice, and be grateful for their service etc.

I feel I should say something regarding that, Weiner, but I'm afraid I do not have the words.
