NEW YORK CITY TO HOST THE FIRST
DANCE PARADE IN THE UNITED STATES
A Legendary Event in the Making: Celebrities on Parade, Broadway Added to Parade Route
April 19, 2007, New York City – In compliance with New York’s controversial moratorium for new parades on Fifth Avenue, Dance Parade will now run down Broadway from 32nd Street, joining Fifth Avenue at 13th Street and ending in Washington Square Park. “We are thrilled to have Broadway as part of our parade route”, explains Liat Tamam, PR and Communications Director. “Broadway is the oldest and longest street in Manhattan and the place where New Yorkers and the world come to celebrate. It’s the street on which legends are made, and you can bet the first Dance Parade in New York City will be legendary.”
Legendary celebrities are joining the first ever annual Dance Parade, on Saturday, May 19. World renowned DJ Danny Tenaglia is on board with the "Be Yourself" party float, along with the infamous founder of hip-hop, DJ Kool Herc, who's bringing the Foot Klan to dance along in the parade. Also on board are the original B-boys and pioneers of breakdance “The Twins” Keith and Kevin Smith. The roster of stars continues with the legendary John "Jellybean" Benitez, the reputable Victor Simonelli, Melting Pot NYC & Peter Munch. The most renowned dance schools in New York will participate in Dance Parade, such as Dance Manhattan, Sandra Cameron Dance Center, Dancesport, Djoniba Dance Center, Soho Dance, Stepping Out Studios.
Dance Parade aims to honor and celebrate all forms of dance in an historic parade. Produced by Dance Parade Inc., a volunteer-staffed nonprofit organization, the event aspires to increase awareness of the benefits of dance as well as the history and diversity that help make dance an expressive form of art.
Bringing together the many diverse forms of dance, it is truly a “One Parade with Many Cultures”. To date, over 125 dance groups representing 6,000 dancers have registered. Float line-up will begin at 10am between Broadway and Fifth Avenue on 32nd Street. The event begins with a press conference at noon, opening ceremony at 1pm and parade procession at 2pm. The Parade will culminate in Washington Square Park with a Dance Festival on four stages from 4-8pm.
