If you plan on keeping the 50D when you get a new body then get the EF and use that as the lens you always keep on that body.

Also if you are planing to sell your 50D body just wait how hard it is when you have two bodies in your bag ready to shoot... its a nice feeling.

Also I am looking to get out of the house more, since I think the air here is killing me ( ).

I am thinking about taking up more train shooting. Anyone ever shot trains/light rail?

I have done a little bit, but not invest a lot of time into it. Its probably one of the bigger photographic fields next to sports and modeling...

The only thing I am worried about is getting hassled by the cops or the railroads.

And lol, yeah it is nice cruising with 2 cameras. My gf has a 50D as well, and sometimes when she's not out shooting with me I put another lens on hers and take it with me

Rare shot of a east-bound double stack coming out the Cascades Tunnel. As you can see on the plaque in the background its almost 8 miles long and it actually summits the Cascade mountain range while in the tunnel.

When they come out the west portal they are flying since its about 2/3 downhill in the shoot.

what kind of trains do you have in mind?

I haven't shot any with frequency myself but I have a couple of contacts on flickr who shoot trains pretty much exclusively so I've seen more than a few shots.

We have a lot of freight here. I want to get up in the mountains. Those are always nice shots.

We have a couple Amtrak runs that terminate here. Both the Coast Starlight (Seattle<->LA) and The Empire Builder (Seattle/Portland->Spokane<->Chicago). We also have a multiple per day trip commuter that runs from Canada to Oregon.

I'd love to shoot The Empire Builder some. It travels the Cascade route over Stevens Pass, I have chased it down the east side at night, I'd love to get it shot there, but its usually leaving in the late evening and its fairly dark. The scenery is amazing there though as it comes into Wenatchee, the tracks cut through apple orchards and over little rivers and streams and other stuff. Amazing.

Mainly freight though since we have so much of it. Either shooting in the mountains or day-tripping it out to the Columbia River Gorge, the UP and BNSF run up opposite sides of the river and there is tons of trains per day there.

Thanks! Trains are somewhat of an obsession on my dads side of the family. My dad must have hundreds of pictorial books from at least the last 100 years of rail-roading. Mainly stuff from the north and the west. He is a huge fan of the Milwaukee Road. Also the magazines are great. Lots of them are great photography journals too.

Its amazing what they will do to capture trains. Some guys rope up dozens of flashes around bridges and stuff just to capture a train at night on a trestle. Course they usually pass along word to the railroad so the engineer doesnt freak and throw the emergency breaks or something...
