That's awesome to hear! Maybe the CL+J00F night really helped him out in LA when he played after that. I remember before he started playing at Vanguard, his monthly updates after his LA gigs would generally have him having a so-so time. Even a time I thought was a real good night he was so-so about. |
I think you are quite wrong. He has been killing massives in LA for insomniac for years. He is doing Nocturnal this month. The gigs at Circus for spundae when he used to play 4 hr sets were epic and always busy, the last one with Mauro Picotto was one of my favorite nights at circus ever. I would agree the last couple gigs for RED at arena were sub par shows by his standards, but John has had loyal fans in LA for years

I'm not talking about massives, that's completely different. And yeah, J00F always had a good crowd when I saw him at Circus, but I just remember a monthly update on his site would say how he couldn't find a connection with the crowd and stuff, and I think I saw a post like that after more than one LA visit. It might've not even been from a Circus gig...did he ever play at Arena? Maybe for Heaven? I'm not sure, but I remember having a blast one time and then he said that and was like huh?
If I'm wrong, then awesome. I'm just going by what I recall. This was a long time ago. Either way, glad to see him doing great. Some cities jsut take time to warm up to some DJs. I remember when LA wouldn't go so crazy to Markus Schulz...Markus openly talks about how LA used to scare him but how he loves playing here now, saying how it's hard to impress us because we get to hear so many of the best DJs here.

Maybe you are referring to Red at Arena in May'07? Here's another quote:
"Five days later I was back in LA! There's been many changes here recently with club brands moving to different venues and some changing musical direction. I find myself moving back to my original home of Red at The Venue. I had a great time but didn't feel I played my best. It was if I was learning the crowd again and couldn't 100% work out what music they wanted until the end of the night. I hate it when this happens; you wish you could rewind the clock and start again?? Maybe it was because I was so used to playing for the Spundae crowd? The following night I played to a crowd that I know very well at 1015 in San Francisco. Now this was one hell of a night. From start to finish of my set, there was a powerful sense of occasion for all of us. I hadn't been at the club for a while, so I was really excited to be back there and I could tell they where excited to see me too. This only fuelled the whole event and we where all at one throughout my whole set, dam that atmosphere was electric that night."

Since I saw JOOF at Monster Massive in 2002, I saw every show he did in LA except the most recent on at Vangard by himself. The only one I didnt like was that show he played at RED at arena. It wasnt that busy, and the crowd was not into him much. Other than that he has always been well recieved in LA.
