Behaviour in the womb of the parent can actually be a factor as well. Lest not forget that you are concious inside the womb of the mother. Could triggers of sexual orientation begin at this point? perhaps. I will agree though with boris and jenny here that it upbringing is the main factor if not the only factor.

If the sexual orientation of parent figures has such an influence on the child, how are there gay people in the first place?

If its not genetic (you can have hetero and homo identical twins) then it has to be a nurture effect.

parents and society have so many sub variables that would vary for each individual.

It has to do more with male and female presence. It's been theorized that children need both a mother and a father figure in order to best develop their own gender identity. I believe that was Erickson.



edit: So yeah perhaps if the parents themselves display non-traditional gender roles.
