It seems that Hawtin [especially in this ENTER incarnation] has been bringing a lot more people into the fold over the past year or 2 -- that is, somehow he's become much more appealing to the uninitiated. I was really surprised when he didn't jump back to #1 on the RA poll this year, but I suppose the majority of those new fans have no real interest in the RA perspective, and Troxler's stuff has become much more ubiquitous among the RA crowd.
Somehow, the ENTER events have very little appeal for me. I've had some great experiences seeing Hawtin in the past, but, based on my more recent observations, I just wouldn't expect the same next time around.
That being said - Hawtin has this mystique about him now that makes those newer fans feel that, by virtue of having experienced an ENTER event and seen the great Richie and Loco and whoever else, they have become seriously aligned with the real, underground techno scene. |
I like Hawtin except for his track selection. To me it's just all about the music a DJ is playing, nothing else. I also find he tries to play too many loops together at the same time. The music he plays is just effective, but completely uninspired. Kinda like Joris Voorn but with even less personality. I recently listened to a set of his from around 2003 when he was still playing records and it was just so much better.
