you can't deny that through out history the bible has changed. even if you get to the core beginnings of christianity, the counsel of nicea and the decisions about the trinity bla bla bla...i'm sure you already know...the book is a compilation of what the bishops of the church have decided upon. this has happened through out history on many different issues...are these interpretations not crucial to todays teachings?

Mainly written by the apostles (new testament, which I find to be the more important part). It has a weird, twisted path when trying to find ways to get along with native cultures. Kind of snowballed and trapper-keepered everything.

The greek-latin-english translation also throws a wrench in there. My dad learned hebrew and arabic and read the originals and we talk about how there are all of these 1 word differences in there that change the entire meaning of sooo many things. Its been a learning experience.

I have my issues, with the bible, no doubt. Ive gone through months of hating it, thinking I found a contradiction that meant either God wasnt good, or the Bible was lying. Then Id find an answer one day and be like Ohhhhhhhh.

Cant say I dont understand why people have issues with El Biblo, but I think its a pretty amazingly written piece, and study-worthy if nothing else.

definitely agree on the study worthy part. i love learning about religions even if i'm not religious myself. i think the whole idea and the effects that they've had on the world are really interesting.

yeah, and I think they all have something to offer philosophically speaking on relationships and treating people. I hate to sound as hokey as this, but I do like a lot of the Eastern philosophies as well, because they are about how to live life, and there is no real reason you couldnt live life like that and still be Christian, or Jewish, or whatever.

Orbax is right (of course) - they didn't write it. Moses edited most of the first books, and the Apostles wrote most of the New Testament (Luke followed Paul around, documented) - some of the books are letters from the Apostles (1&2 Corinthians) - Revelation was written by John, etc. Although it's true some have an unknown author, or many authors.

FF, what you are talking about actually happened. There was a version of the Bible (originated in like 400 AD or something) called the Alexandrian version. They took a bunch of stuff out and skewed a bunch of stuff in the Bible. Although it's been agreed that the basic message still gets across, it still makes a bunch of changes that are just... wrong, I guess. Scarey thing is, this version actually circulated into somewhat modern versions of the Bible - and it wasn't until the Dead Sea scrolls were found they could tell which version was actually correct. (Alexandrian or Gutenberg or whatever)

In addition to my above comments - it's true that the Bible was rewritten and retranslated countless times.

However, the original books of the Bible have been translated directly from their "purest" form (Dead Sea Scrolls and other stuff dated to around 100 or so A.D.) directly to modern english.

You'd be suprised how many people in the world speak Greek and Hebrew. I had to take the basic courses just to get a BA in Theology. When you get your masters & PhD, you have to take even more (12-15 hours of each, I believe).

Point is, although they were translated and probably screwed up over the ages, we (today) have translated them from the original written languages to modern english. The only errors would be from the original written books (which we might not have) to the scrolls that we do have.

I agree that most the religions do offer a good way to live life, treat people and generally be a good person. I've studied Taoism (personal favorite) and I like a lot of the eastern religions as well. It's not hokey. You could call it a new trend, maybe... unification of the world religions.

yeah, thats why I dont like it. Its always been kind of trendy to be buddhist or something if youre a westerner, and many people are doing it specifically for that reason.

I also dont like the idea of mixing all the religions together and making your own. I know everyone has a personal relationship with God and all, but I think there are some basic guidelines one needs to follow to be truly saved. Ive heard a lot of crazy weird pagan stuff from what I call New Age Christians. They are kind of like Wiccan Buddhist Hippy Christians who say they are Christian and then follow approx. zero of the tenets set down by Peter.

As a Christian Ive found it frustrating because they are like "Who are you to say Im not Christian"

its kind of ridiculous, and its part of Gen Xs retro hippy movement that wants to go to zero restrictions, no accountability, and to have everything.

Then again Im an old man

I can't be arsed to read the whole thread, if someone already mentioned it, my apologies...

Where I live, black males like to wear a shirt down to (and even past) their knees, a little "bag" on the back which looks like a bowling pin with strings, a bandanna (preferrably white) and a hat over it (tipped to the side). I don't know where I was when this little "trend" was first starting, cause it seems all of a sudden everyone you see is doing it, even some white teen males.

I don't know how it is where you guys live, but I think it's looks really gay

I hope no-one thinks that my comment is racist, cause that's the last thing on my mind right now.

The thing is, however, that homosexuality has always been treated as different. Before someone brings up the Greeks, it was a power thing. In nature and in some societies (prison for instance) homosexuality, primarily gay homosexuality was used to dominate other men. The phallus being forced into someone is a power trip and thats why it happened. It established hierarchy.

Now actually being attracted to men and boys is something else. I believe Ive already gone past the religious part, and can say with a high level of confidence that mankind as a whole has never accepted homosexuality as a way of life. Until the "enlightened" days we are in now. The whole thing wraps two horrible ideas together. Gayness and Pride. Wtg...

Ive already stated some of the things that bother me about it, besides its societal impact on the group and the individual.

But: in other countries homosexuals are treated better, yes? Its because here in America where everyone takes such F*$#@!ing offense to everything said, that when the issue was first raised about homosexuality being wrong, the homosexual community, or at least the outspoken part of it, decided to get offended.

They took it personally and began to IDENTIFY themselves as gay. That became the focus of their lives. Im straight. Im a virgin. Thank god my sexuality isnt the keystone of my life.

As soon as someone takes a character trait, and especially ones where its currently perceived as negative, and then says That Is Who I AM. They #1 tie them selves to the anchor, so to speak and #2 lose a bit of their humanity by saying they are a thing. Which in turn makes them easier to hate.

At first the ploy was "love your brother" and "hes gay" so you had to love both of them. THat backfired and now there is a lot of hatred towards gayness AND gays.

Instead of just admitting, yeah, there are probably a male and female gender for a reason, they went off and said its natural, and that it, again, ISNT WRONG.

It aint right! thats my point. It is against whatever law you wish invoke be it religious or naturalist or secular.

Most people when defending homosexuality point to their friends, like Sly did. great. Doesnt mean they are doing the right thing because they are fun or neat or whatever.

So, when you look at the current treatment of homosexuals, it is in many parts self imposed. They decided to focus, much like the "black" community has on a negative aspect, and they have decided to stop any social movement and say "we arent moving until we are told we are good and you love us"

not gonna happen. It just alienates you further and further as the rest of society moves on.

Its the same negative impact as being referred to as "African American". It puts that barb that you arent entirely American in there. Whites are whites, even though they are just as diverse as the African community, but God forbid you call a black a black, because that is racist!

Its just the trend in America to take offense to something and immediately polarize the issue and then everyone gets to choose a camp. For or Against. and this is sad because it puts the chance of resolution and mediation to almiost nil.

what about the thai ladyboy's, they are accepted in thailand, except for maybe tourists who were expecting some hot action from a young girl and find out they have a pen0r.
