Let me use the Spiderman/Peter Parker analogy to explain it. The submissive person is actually the one with the true power, because to have power is to not abuse it. "With great power comes great responsibility", etc. While on the surface it appears that the submissive is relinquishing control, they actually are not - because by the very nature of the dominant's needs, it gives the submissive person control over them.
