I've heard there's a Treo 700p coming out later this year that will address the memory issues, and boost the RAM from 32-64. I'm going to see how that plays out before I buy one.

If I want to take my phone to Australia and use it, does anyone know how I can "unlock" it or whatever it is to make it work. It's a Motor T720 (it's a piece of garbage, but don't want to spend money on a new one).

I don't think it's tri-band since it didn't work when I went to Europe - couldn't even send a text message.

Has anyone ever had this done before? How does it work? Is it worth it?

If it is not Tri-band, then you wont be able to use it in Australia. Dual-band phones can cover GSM networks in pairs such as 900 and 1800 MHz frequencies (Europe, Asia, Australia and Brazil) or 850 and 1900 (North America).

You would need to get a triband phone if you want cell phone service down under.

A piece of advice. If you are going to be overseas for over a week or so, it would be better to get their local providers 'pay as you go' service rather than racking up roaming charges.

I'm planning on getting pay as you go (i'll be there for 6 months), but I wanted to avoid buying a new phone and was hoping I'd be able to use my current one (by unlocking it). But i guess if it's not tri-band, it won't work at all right? even if it is 'unlocked'?

Meh.. i guess i'll have to buy a new phone while I'm there and then buy a new one when I get back

Yup, if your phone is not Triband, it will not work in Australia.

Instead of buying a phone out there and one when you get back, why not just buy a Tri or Quad band phone form here, and you can use it around the world. You can get some quad phones for a pretty decent price these days.

I guess that's the better thing to do... if I do that, then I'll have to unlock it as well right? Then when I get ot Aussie I can just buy pay as you go minutes, hopefully.

I'll have to put my Rogers account on hold - if i can do that - I actually doubt it. I have a pretty good Corporate rate which I won't be able to get again and I don't want to loose it.

Geez - cell phoones are such headaches but you can't live with out them eh?

If your phone is locked to Rogers, then yeah, it won't work there (I think an easy way to tell is if it has Rogers branding on the actual handset, a sureway to know is to grab a friend's sim card who does not use Rogers and stick it into yours). There's unlocking services in the GTA though, it costs like 20 30 bucks.

And yeah, major headaches

Its not as bad as you think.

1. My advice: Do not buy a phone from Rogers, etc. You could get an unlocked phone on ebay or other places (eg. easycell.ca or Pacific Mall) for a good price if you do your homework. Plus you get a much better choice in phones. Only thing you have to look for is Tri or Quad band.

2. Do your research on service providers in Australia (I think Vodafone are the largest - but are normally the most expensive), so when to get there, you know which one to go for.

3. Call up Rogers and find out if you could put the account on hold. Does not hurt to try.

Good luck.

Believe me, I will never buy a phone from Rogers - if it wasn't for the Coporate plan i'm with, I probably wouldnt' be with them.
Iv'e already looked into the phone provider in Oz and damn, is it expensive. I'll be getting pay as you go since i don't suspect I'd be using it much. It'll just need a phone number while I'm there and it's good to have, esp since I'm not planning to get a land line.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. I'll look into that.

Any placeas in particular in Pacific Mall that you (or anyone else) would recommend. I just looked online at their mall directory and there's over 20 communications/cell phone stores!!

BTW- i didn't realize phone where sooooo expensive if you don't buy them with a plan... Geez!

It's great going month to month right now, and NOT prepaid. The freedom feels great. Fuck yearly contracts.
