The only argument that ignorant assholes use against Iran is - "..but they want to wipe Israel off the map." How stupid does one have to be to assume that such a thing could in fact take place? Iran is not some blind terrorist faction. I can assure that they realize that any act of aggression from them could mean suicide. |
There are a number of major issues with Iran which may very well lead to the country being an enormous problem for the US and a number of other nations in the years to come. For one thing, they've continually refused to put any sort of stop to the development of a nuclear program for which they have no real need outside of the development of nuclear weapons--not the greatest thing for a country which has harbored terrorists for years and is making threats about wiping others off the face of the map to be having now or at any time. Whether you despise Israel, consider it an illegitimate state, or just hate Jewish people, the country is still one of our strongest allies, and when another country makes such a threat, it's more silly to ignore it than to be concerned. A lot of this is due to Ahmadinejad, but the guy is still the leader of the country, and it would neither be the first nor the last time that one lunatic could lead a nation into a state of uncalled-for aggression or worse. Within the next few years, there is far more reason to be concerned about Iran than there is for nearly any other nation from the US perspective.
That all being said, going in and bombing them or starting a military conflict right now would be moronic. That doesn't mean that we should wait 'til they nuke somebody before we do anything, but a military response right now is neither justifiable nor beneficial. Claiming that Iran's done nothing wrong or is just an innocent country that "ignorant assholes" want to pick on is completely absurd, but we can't just attack anyone at any time.
c0r version: You're all wrong.

I seriously doubt that there is anybody in this world is insane enough to actually use a nuclear bomb (if anything, I would be worried about NK - they are delusional). I'm quite certain that the only reason for Iran to make nukes is to become a major player in the world community. Think about Cold War times - both sides had nukes, but both were afraid to use it because of the inevitable consequences (mutual destruction). Besides, it's not like the old times. They can't just discretely launch a nuclear warhead

How many countries hat the US? I bet that all of them made similar threats at some point in time. The fact of the matter is that none have the capability to do this. Besides, Israel could take care of itself. They have a superior military and receives more US aid then any other country. Ahmadinejad may be crazy, but not suicidal.

And why did you come to that assumption? I suppose the fact that I'm not blindly bashing Iran makes me an anti-semite too?

Not really. There are far more people then you may think that belive that Israel should not exist. I can assure that there are many other like Ahmadinejad.
The bottom line is that it's very unlikely for anybody to use nukes in the 21st century. Especially Iran. I'm 100% sure that Iran realizes that if they use a nuke - their country would get leveled. The way I see it is that they say a lot, but in the end, they still have a realistic outlook on things.

I wasn't specifically addressing my post to you, first of all. In any case...
I didn't say I thought they would use them, but giving them that bargaining chip is beyond dangerous. I also am not convinced that he's not suicidal, if that means taking Israel down with him.
I didn't accuse anyone in particular of being anti-semitic, but many of those people you mentioned, who do not think Israel should exist, are, in fact, extremely anti-semitic. Not all, perhaps, but an overwhelming majority. I'm not denying that that's a huge group of people. It is, indeed, a very large segment of the world population. Numbers have never made any case, and I can't even begin to describe how strongly I disagree with those people who have that stance.
Finally, you cannot be 100% sure of that fact, and that's a HUGE risk to take if you're wrong.
The bottom line is, though, that this is all fairly irrelevant to this specific discussion since everyone aside from the OP who, while he may be on the right track with some of his points, is just as emotionally unreasonable and fanatical as everybody else. We can't and shouldn't attack Iran right now--plain and simple. It's a non-issue.
