I don't understand how someone could shit on our performance in these Olympics... The Americans have 20 medals, we have 7... Our population can fit into New York State ffs! It's all relative!

Just because we have a smaller population doesn't mean we can't have more medals. I wouldn't say this situation is relative to the population but considering all these ads about the own the podium program, and having a home court advantage.... We SHOULD have more medals or better ones. You spend 4 years+ training on events just like all the other competitors and I have found some athletes are going easy on the their performances.

I believe we are predicted to win about 27 medals from what I heard. We are about half way through the games and we aren't anywhere near where I believe we should be. Things could chanhe this week, and I sure hope so, but I am not going to lose any hope in our athletes.

Not exactly....with respect to winter Olympics a lot has to do with proximity to training facilities....the population in say upstate new york...or in Colorado, or Utah where most of these training facilities are isn't all that different from say Quebec, Alberta, or BC....it has to be viewed in terms of feasibility....with respect to "own the podium" the objective was the make training more feasible for athletes...give them more opportunity....we've put a lot of tax dollars into developing something that hasn't really developed. To look at it from a purely economic cost/benefit analysis....as it stands so far the former outweighs the later.

so you don't consider the fact that their population is literally 10x bigger than ours a variable? Granted, you won't get downhill skiers from Texas, but you won't from Halifax either lol

I'm not really talking about the "own the podium" program, who cares. Anyone who bitches about 7 medals and a tie for 4th place in the rankings (on planet earth) needs to be slapped...

Ha someone feel free to slap me!

but if you decide to compare population sizes, it has no merit simply because the we do not have a hand full to pick from.

Own the podium or own less, our money has gone into providing athletes with trainers and training facilities and our performance is lacking way under expected.

jon jon: Germany tends to win the medal count at most winter olypmics, and they only have a population of 80million. If we went by population, that would mean USA (should) get 3-4 times as many medals as Germany, but, its not the case

I think the biggest factor depends on what country is invested or interested in. Case in point, the USA dominates the summer Olympics, because we have more athletes that train in basketball/baseball/track and field/etc than we do curling, hockey, etc. Mind you, we dont do **poorly** in the winter games, but one can certainly see the difference between summer and winter. We dominate one while have serious competition and flaws in another.

Another good example is soccer in the USA: we just aren't as interested (unfortunately) and we havent had a lot of exceptional teams, athletes or investors as other countries do. Thus, when we play on an international level, we fail miserably

I care about the "own the podium" program as part of my tax dollars were spent on trying to make these athletes competitive and win medals. We were told and we were expected to finish on top of the standings for this Olympics. We do have a lot of events left that we are expected to medal in so we should see a large jump in the number of medals.

Was the program a success....it doesn't seem like it...as the events we are winning medals in are events we have always been good at. Why aren't we doing better in Alpine Skiing, cross country skiing, luge, and other events...when we invested money in technology and training to get them on the podium....I don't know about you but when I put money into an investment I want something more than "I did my best".

We had 24 medals in 2006 and finished 4th, in 2002 we had 17 medals and finished 5th, in 1998 we had 15 medals and finished 5th and in 1994 we had 12 medals and finished 7th. So the Canadian Olympic Committee made a very bold statement by saying they were going to finish first this year and they asked Canadians to give them more money so they could get on top of the podium......yet we are still where we always are. So why spend more of our money for the same results?

My point about the "own the podium" program is that it's seperate from what I'm trying to say...
