jon jon: Germany tends to win the medal count at most winter olypmics, and they only have a population of 80million. If we went by population, that would mean USA (should) get 3-4 times as many medals as Germany, but, its not the case
I think the biggest factor depends on what country is invested or interested in. Case in point, the USA dominates the summer Olympics, because we have more athletes that train in basketball/baseball/track and field/etc than we do curling, hockey, etc. Mind you, we dont do **poorly** in the winter games, but one can certainly see the difference between summer and winter. We dominate one while have serious competition and flaws in another.
Another good example is soccer in the USA: we just aren't as interested (unfortunately) and we havent had a lot of exceptional teams, athletes or investors as other countries do. Thus, when we play on an international level, we fail miserably

I'm not really talking about the "own the podium" program, who cares. Anyone who bitches about 7 medals and a tie for 4th place in the rankings (on planet earth) needs to be slapped... |
I care about the "own the podium" program as part of my tax dollars were spent on trying to make these athletes competitive and win medals. We were told and we were expected to finish on top of the standings for this Olympics. We do have a lot of events left that we are expected to medal in so we should see a large jump in the number of medals.
Was the program a success....it doesn't seem like it...as the events we are winning medals in are events we have always been good at. Why aren't we doing better in Alpine Skiing, cross country skiing, luge, and other events...when we invested money in technology and training to get them on the podium....I don't know about you but when I put money into an investment I want something more than "I did my best".
We had 24 medals in 2006 and finished 4th, in 2002 we had 17 medals and finished 5th, in 1998 we had 15 medals and finished 5th and in 1994 we had 12 medals and finished 7th. So the Canadian Olympic Committee made a very bold statement by saying they were going to finish first this year and they asked Canadians to give them more money so they could get on top of the podium......yet we are still where we always are. So why spend more of our money for the same results?
