i was watching the news hour with him lehrer and the analysis there seemed to be that the lebanese government is absolutely powerless to remove hezbollah from their country. theyre better armed, and they mentioned something i didnt quite grasp, about hezbollah's 'ace in the hole'. something to do with changing how parliament seats are awarded, which would put even more seats in hezbollah hands.

G8 urges 'extremists' to stop Middle East attacks
By Stephanie Kennedy and wires

The leaders of the Group of Eight (G8) nations meeting in the Russian city of St Petersburg have called for a cease-fire in the Middle East.
The escalating crisis in Israel and Lebanon dominated the meeting of leaders from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States.

At the end of a four-hour discussion, the G8 leaders issued a statement calling on the "extremists" to halt their attacks.
The leaders are also pressuring Israel, arguing that it was "critical that Israel, while exercising the right to defend itself, be mindful of the strategic and humanitarian consequences of its actions".

The leaders have told Israel to "refrain from acts that would destabilise the Lebanese government" and to avoid civilian casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure.

Israel has welcomed the statement by the G8 group, saying it put the onus on Hezbollah to free two Israeli soldiers and halt rocket fire on the Jewish state.

"Israel concurs with the position of the international community, which places responsibility for the conflict on extremist elements," Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said.

"(Israel) sees the path to a solution through the release of the abducted soldiers, a cessation of rocket fire on Israel, and full implementation of (UN) resolution 1559," she said in a statement.

"Israel will cooperate with international parties to turn these principles into concrete diplomatic action."

That'll work. "You boys stop killing those boys"

that still doesnt mean that they should just allow them to operate there.

Has anyone else noticed the lack of coverage about Palestine? has it been forgotten - what's going on there?

Well that just throws a hairball into things...(the parliament thing I'm talking about).

Not too surprised about Hezbollah being better armed though.
With Syria recently departing Lebanon, the Lebanese military obviously wasn't stablized enough, even though Syria thought so during their departure.
I can't understand why since Hezbollah were still firing rockets into Israel at that time...

so, what exactly would you suggest? the analysis i saw (and im hardly an expert so am forced to take it at face value) was that the lebanese government were powerless to stop them.

re the parliament, it was something about how the seats of parliament are organised by religion or something. but if hezbollah wanted to, they could force it to be by popular vote of which they have a lot more than their 30 odd seats currently.

This is not good...

Israel bombed the airport and the major roads leaving the country, it costs 300pounds for a three hour taxi ride to Damascus. There are about 1000 Australians in Lebanon now :/

What are you going on about?
What "more" enemies are there?

I think he means that world opinion of Israel has changed after their disproportionately bellicose response to Hezbollah's terror attacks, and while this will only draw criticism from the west, it has the potential to turn moderate allies like Jordan and Egypt against them.

If you watched Dateline the other night it showed the IDF shooting at the media to create a media blackout in Gaza, so it probably isn't good

i dont know im not a politician. plead for UN/US assistance, let israeli forces into the hezbollah controled area to get rid of them, have a media campaign to sway the public opinion against hezbollah. all fine by me. of course any israeli operation should be closely monitored by the international community.
