If there is one thing we can agree on, its that Toronto nightlife is a bargain. I do think prices need to rise but i do remember reading people bitch on here a few times that $35 or $40 at guv was a rip off. So you see, you will never please everyone.

You could always come 3 hours south to where I live, Rochester NY and pay $20 US to watch Crystal Meth spin (read : not live PA). I have been up to the guv a few times in the past year, Hamilton, a feb 14 party at a music hall, couple trips to the comfort zone, and Boa. I was packed in with the rest of you for Amin and still managed to have a good time. I do admit, being shoved, poked, and prodded can be a bit overwhelming. But appreciate what you have. You do not have to drive 3 hours to see it. You are not paying all that much to see top DJs. You do not have a 3 hour drive home. You live in a city where it is OK to listen to electronic music. Sure the bouncers can seem like blockheads at the guv, but if I was sober I would be pissed at all the sketched out people at 8am needing to get the heck out. I dunno.. I agree with what has been said but it could be much worse. We have no good clubs, we go home at 2am from the bars. ATB was the largest gathering we have had in years. That my friends is sad.

That letter from Guv is priceless too. They may as well have a template for use after any major event, hahahaha:
"[insert date]
We, at the Guvernment Nightclub, wish to apologize to those who expressed their displeasure of the [insert date] evening.
[insert DJ] was booked at the Guvernment at [insert price] per person, affording as many people as possible to attend. The response was so overwhelming that we tried to appease most patrons by bringing them in on time to see [insert DJ]. Unfortunately, this caused confusion and discomfort for many, including our security staff who did not handle it properly.
Our intention was to provide you with a highly paid DJ, who is extremely popular, at a reasonable price. [insert price] per person is below average for a DJ of [insert DJ] calibre. We do, however, take full responsibility for the regrettable behaviour of some of our security staff and to that end, we have reprimanded some and terminated others.
We take your comments seriously and wish to assure you that proper customer service is very important to us. We strive to treat all patrons with respect. We will do better next time.
Yours truly,
The Management
Guvernment / Kool Haus Entertainment Complex"

as long as guys are still trying to get laid, they will still be going to clubs- smoking ban or not- b/c as handy as it is to smoke in their living rooms-- it's kinda tricky to pick up chicks (or see intl dj's or meet new ppl etc)

I work for two restaurants, as well as a club, and the entire city is dead.
Is the no-smoking bylaw to blame?? Doubtfull. Face it, summer in Toronto is lame(except for us party kids), and most people flee the city, especially after Canada Day weekend, and take their two weeks vacation.
We are still only a year removed from SARS and Mad Cow, and the city hasn't recovered.. hell, the Indy weekend was light on attendance, and Canada Day was dead as well. Some clubs are the best in the summer, simply because they aren't filled, or have more of the regulars out since school is over/vacations are being taken.
As for the letter from the Guv, they needed to say a lot more IMO, especially regarding the overcrowding, but @ least they are listening(perhaps the Bouncer's behaviour was crowd flow related).
