It's really hard to compare because you have to remember that 10 years ago I was in a very different point in my life.
Some of the years I was going over it might just be for a few hours on Saturday night, or a few times it was even us cutting class during high school to sneak over to Detroit for a few hours to try and see Carl Cox.
Compare that to now where it's a three day event, with friends of mine from Windsor, Toronto, Buffalo, Kitchener, etc all coming in and getting hotel rooms and partying for the weekend.
Sort of like apples and oranges.
That being said there have been some very memorable moments.
The first few years the attendance of the festival was much higher than it is now. Part of that was because it was free, part of that was because it was new, neither one of which the festival is now.
I'm not saying that more people necessarily means better, but there was something thrilling about being at the mainstage when Richie Hawtin was playing the headlining slot on Monday night in the middle of that many people. There simply aren't that many people at the festival anymore. Some years there was more than 1 million people who attended over the weekend.
There were some bad experiences too...
One year Carl Craig was an organizer and he was fired part way through for political reasons. After that many of the dj's backed out.
Fraser and I cut class in highschool to go to Detroit and see Carl Cox...I remember looking up on stage and saying to Fraser...
"That's not Carl Cox!"
"How can you tell"
"Carl Cox is a giant black man with glasses, that is a tall skinny white guy who looks sick"
The one final thing I will say has to do with Paxahau, the production company who took over the festival, rescued it from bankrupcy and has been running it the past few years...
Ever since they started running it, the quality has been top notch.
The past few have been some of the very very best.
