last night was the first time i actually through i pulled my hamstring. it was pretty muggy out so i decided to get on the treadmill at the gym so i started running and i felt great, i was doing really well, i felt really good at about the 2.5m mark my left hamstring started to feel really light, almost as if i didn't feel it, then i felt kind of like a slipping feeling almost pre-crampish. I instantly stopped the treadmill . It sucked too cuz I was on pace to knocking out the 5k in under 29mins which would be great for me. I think I ended at a 21min 2.5m and had a glorious sweat going. also didn't help that i was running between two pretty cute girls owells.

lifted chest after my run and felt great...tonight it's bikram to sweat and stretch out, everything is sore...especially my upper back, neck, and legs. could use a good stretching session anyways!

It sounds like you stopped the treadmill at just the right time nyce. Any longer and you probably would have done more damage to that muscle. At 4000metres for 21 minutes, you were probably heading more towards a 27:30 - 28 minute 5k, which is a major improvement.

I'd normally recommend you give those legs a rest tonight if you felt something going last night, as there could be an underlying problem there just waiting to be aggravated, but I know I'm probably not gonna convince you otherwise

A good pre-stretch and a steady bike ride may do you good, just to loosen them up a little. If you feel a twinge though, I would give the leg a rest for another couple of days.

I managed a 6mile 40 minute steady paced jog last night, so it's now about consolidation for me and slowly building up the mileage.

eternal - yea I really wanted to knock that 5k out last night i felt great up until the 2-2.25m mark, then it felt kinda loose and i knew that i was pushing myself so i stopped. i was thinking about going for a bike ride tonight but i think my legs can use a rest, but am worried this weekend i might not get any in. Maybe I'll get some in on sunday and take today-saturday off. Before last night I ran Tuesday morning so I figured all day tuesday/wednes should have been enough rest, guess i can use a better recovery plan. I'm teetering on tonight as I'd like to get into bikram and sweat my ass off

wai - i think tonight's session is at 830 on 72nd street, i may be going with my neighbor but she's more of the advanced then me.

bikram's schedule - http://bikramyoganyc.com/schedule_uws.html

well for some people the cost of time in preparing rice and pasta is not worth it if you can get instant gratification with fast food

fresh fruit and veggies are expensive. personally, i spend a good chunk of money on food that's good for me.

if you have a family and pretty low income it is more cost effective to buy ready made cheap stuff like mcdonalds meals. white bread which is crap for you costs less than whole grain wheat and fruit cocktail in a can costs less as well. meat isn't exactly cheap either, the lower the fat the more expensive it is and meat without hormones costs more too. iceberg lettuce verse argula /spring greens costs less and not as good for you. i can go on and on.

to eat well costs money and if you are poor you don't have the money to put toward it. can you try to eat well, of course but realistically with a lower income it's more difficult to eat as well.

Point fairly made. I agree with you that food high in vitamins and important stuff is expensive, but carbohydrates are ridiculously cheap. You can buy a two week supply of rice for like $10.

Agreed, but eating 3 meals of basic carbs a day is better for you than eating 3 meals of McDonalds a day.

edit: my own diet is disgusting. I eat probably 10 pieces of fruit a year, and 6 serves of vegetables a week.

Most of my meals consist of simple things like pasta/rice, then I take multivitamins ($10 a week) to get what I'm missing in nutrients.

It seems to work okay, I only get one cold a year. If I wasn't well off and had to feed a family, I'd be taking this route I think.

i agree about the carbs over mcdonalds. good call on the multivitamins too.

i make it a point to eat like two different fruits a day as well as an assortment of veggies all organic of course and i'm happy i'm not poor because i couldn't eat the way i eat. eating badly makes me feel like a sloth
