With 292 points, the Lordi monsters won the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Hard rock hallelujah". European viewers voted for Lordi's song in a show that is normally associated with catchy pop and big ballads.
"This is proof that from now on there will be more rock bands who will have the courage to join in," he said afterwards.
"We have nothing to do with satan worhipping or anthing like that - this is entertainment," Lordi said. Carola, from Sweden, who was the bookmakers' favourite before the contest and won in 1991, came fifth.
Lordi have mostly been influenced by artists, including Kiss, Alice Cooper, WASP and Twisted Sisters, and as the band’s singer pointed out, music is their most important element and not their looks.
"It’s like horror movies. Some people like them, some people don’t," replied when a journalist asked him whether he thinks that their eccentric looks will attract the interest and the votes of the viewers.
As for his make-up, he said it takes him about three hours to get his make-up done, adding that he woke up at 5am to have plenty of time at his disposal to get pretty for the rehearsals.
No country failed to get off the mark - Malta's Fabrizio Faniello came last with one point. Sixth place went to Lithuania's LT United, six men in suits singing: "We are the winners of Eurovision." |
