so basically you really don't understand it fully yourself but since you heard it in your psy101 class you think that we should all agree with you.

so far the only reasoning you've given that science is a religion is that:

1. you must have 'faith' in it just like you do religion.

umm, I didn't hear this from my psy 101 prof, I am a psy 101 prof and I was comparing some of you to my students.


its a slightly humorous statement saying science is the new religion. It is not meant to be taken literally, you really have to have a grasp of ordinary language to understand it.


I am thinking you do not want to understand the saying because most religions you know do not allow for change. Usually they have their groundwork laid out, and people are to follow accordingly....for the most part. However science allows for, and encourages change. Therefore there is a literal discrepancy.

Also you might feel uncomfortable with the saying because currently science holds the 'correct' opinion on most matters, regardless if it is truely correct. Once a scientific theory is proven wrong and a new theory is proposed, then that one is said to be correct, even though later on that theory may be proven incorrect. So there is hardly a time where science is actually said to be faulty.


I keep thinking of the current debate on whether fMRI's actually capture neural activity or not. What they capture is deoxygenation of hemogloben. Researchers have to make the jump to say this is where the neural activity occurs. However it could not be in that area per se.

Im also reminded of the many science based theories that captured the spirit of many science enthusiast like B.F. Skinnner's popularization of behaviorism. I am still a solid believer in it but many many many people have made careers out of disputing it. its all in good science.


so no, im not literally saying science is a religion. I hope that now you can see the similarities and some of the humor in the statement. It took me a while to dislodge the science nuts that I was gripping on, and I think I am a bit more objective for it. I can only suggest that others try it also.

ok now, you've explained yourself better. i think i remember hearing it in a light hearted manner. but i don't think it's funny. i don't think that anyone who respects science for what it is could find it funny with out a lot of explanaition.

actually i remember now where i heard it. and it was from one of my professors. my sociology professor relayed it class. interesting coincidence that it was a professor. anyway at the time i thought it was stupid and still do. maybe it's me but i normally quite enjoy funny things.

edit: i think the reason i think it's stupid is because the phrase suggests science is a fad. like "purple is the new pink". lol. but c'mon, science is not a fad.

How about if a life force/"god" sparked the life, which then evolved naturally? This really seems plausible to me, because life doesn't seem to spontaneously manifest.

And who says it has to be the Christian god? There's plenty of religions and philosophies with creator entities out there, pick and choose.

it is mostly professors who would say such a thing, mainly because part of what they do is play devils advocate and challenge people's thinking.
