It's nearly 6pm and my day is just settling down. Yes, Mr.Tijs Verwest and I go away back and our paths cross here and there in various ways. In some ways daily and in some ways in person but I think you know something about that kind of connection.
Clearly you’re a fan. For some a fan means an over played disk and for some a constantly replenished complete collection. So, if that is the range from 1-10 (in the DJ Tiesto fan scale) LOL , I'd say I'm a #8.
I guess what I'm trying to get at is, do you have or have you seen his DVD "Another Day At The Office"? Well, in that they do have a clip from Area2 in Toronto. I'm not in it or anything but in one clip where he's in his tour bus getting psyched and he has a little funky battery powered turntable. I gave that to him earlier that day (how and why is a whole other story)
The whole thing that day and even to this day blow my mind. Just so intense. I don't know if you were around then or not but you have to understand that it was the last day of a stellar August holiday weekend and I even remember how the air was. Nobody had any sleep as it was also "WEMF" weekend. For a while that day it looked like we might not go because everybody else was saying that they were too tired and I was the only one that was going there just for Tiesto. So in our "sleep deprived/semi serial state", I bribed them with lunch at Kalimar (hoping to give them enough energy to be happy about it and knowing that once we got there the music would take over).
Back to the turntable offering, I had a brilliant 25 minute chat with the man himself about how I'd been a fan for nearly 4 years at that point (which totally shocked him) and that I had just stumbled upon his stuff on 'Napster' years before. Looking for what ever music I could find in any style at all that wasn't the cookie cutter crap that the radio had to offer (and still does in my opinion). I've always needed music and had always loved 'Electronica' , so it was such an easy fit. So he said that he loved how it all happened for me with his 'musik' and without it happening out of default. Just fallowing a crowd or my friends. He was so so humble and then said that no matter what happens he knew that he will always have a friend in Toronto.
From my point of view and the fact that because of Area2's founder 'Moby', the rave scene was coming above ground for the first time. (There's a whole amazing Paul Oakenfold-Sara McLc'n.-Tiesto-Moby thing that puts our Tijs (hehe) and the Canadian connection with Sara that makes it extra cool) that he was to have many many more 'friends' in Toronto and made that promise. lol I said "YOU HAVE NO FUCKING IDEA!!!"(excuse the language)
He really couldn't see that he was set up for success. The things that matter to the average person that listens are what he was good at. He's just now been able to take a breath and concentrate on technical stuff like 'mixing'. lol Good for him. I know everybody is watching him like a hawk now because of how huge he has become. Half because their hooked and never wanting that feeling to change and half for fear of that feeling and so they come out in places like TA and cut him off saying that he sucks.
Looking closely at famous people isn't anything new, but the fact still remains is the fact that he's been changing since he started. Right from the beginning he's been producing in 3 different directions. The other thing that people have a harder time seeing is that they themselves are constantly changing in ways which sometimes makes it extra hard to follow. So he's out in LA now with BT and exploring a bit now that he can after being a little bit of a slave to his fame. Also, good for him I say.
Believe me, it crossed my mind as well. 'Oh no, is he turning house?' He may have qualified that publicly out of guilt but DJ Tiesto will ALWAYS be Trance. Because "...it IS just all about the Trance.
Not like it's some sort of silly contest but you really should be more careful
